Andernos les bains is a town of over 12,000 inhabitants that is alive and kicking all year round, with 1 cinema, an indoor public swimming pool, 1 skate park, 1 city stadium, several children's playgrounds, a climbing gym, a laser game... You can stroll along the pedestrianised street for a spot of shopping, eat an ice cream or a crêpe, stroll along the jetty (the longest in France, offering a unique panorama of the Basin, the cabanes Tchanquées, the Île aux oiseaux, etc.) or eat oysters in one of the many tasting rooms in the port.
The Quinconces nature reserve is also the perfect place to discover the flora and fauna of the Bay of Arcachon and to take a stroll as far as Arès.
Not forgetting the Domaine de Certes (Audenge), the Teich bird sanctuary, the Aqualand park (Gujan Mestas), the Parc de le Coccinelle and Kid parc Gujan mestras).
1 hour to the south, you can't come to the Basin without visiting Arcachon and the winter town, then climbing the Dune du Pilat.
30 minutes to the north, you can visit the Cap Ferret peninsula, with its 10 villages, oyster-farming ports, Cap Ferret lighthouse, panoramic view of the Cap Ferret headland, Frédhélian ice-cream parlours, Bélisaire jetty, miniature train, etc.
The vast network of cycle paths in the Gironde allows you to cycle around the basin, to the ocean beaches, Cap Ferret or even Arcachon for the more motivated.
The UBA maritime shuttles run from Andernos to Arcachon and from Cap Ferret to Arcachon.
The Passe Marée (tidal pass) also provides a sea link to Arcachon, even at low tide, and also offers trips around the basin, starting from Andernos.
On the Basin side, you'll find a host of small beaches between Arès and Andernos, but you'll have to wait until high tide to swim there, except at Lac de Saint Brice (Arès), a small reservoir in the Basin, where you can swim whatever the tide.
With the kids, you'll love the Betey beach (Andernos), where you can enjoy a children's play area right on the beach, sample ice creams and crêpes in the small beach snack bar, picnic in the shade of the pine trees and swim at high tide.
On the Atlantic Ocean side, Grand Crohot beach is the nearest ocean beach to Andernos (about 15 minutes by car), but you'll find a multitude of more or less busy, more or less accessible beaches along the miles of coastline that the Atlantic Ocean has to offer.
In summer, CAP 33 offers a host of free sporting activities open to everyone (see the programme online).
If you like local markets, here's a list of nearby markets:
Marché d'Arès: every Tuesday morning
Marché d'Andernos: every Friday morning in the open air and covered market (open according to season)
Lège Bourg market: every Saturday morning.
Cap Ferret market: every morning from mid-June to mid-September, then on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays the rest of the year.
Piraillan market: every morning from mid-June to mid-September.
You can do your shopping in the Arès supermarkets: Leclerc, Lidl and Carrefour City.
In summer and winter, the basin is lively all year round thanks to local events:
The Arès oyster festival on the weekend of 15 August
Cabanes en fête on the 1st Saturday in December
The Andernos jazz festival at the end of July
And let's not forget Lacanau, Soulac-sur-Mer, Bordeaux, the Médoc vineyards and its châteaux...
Sun or rain, hot or cold, high or low tide, as a couple or with the family... you'll always find something to do in the Basin... and you'll always want to come back!
