Our working homestead is located on the Cumberland Plateau near Altamont TN, the Oak is a quiet retreat in the woods that sleeps 3 people (4th on couch). We are located near Stone Door, Greeter Falls, Fiery Gizzard and many more hiking trails. There are no street or dusk to dawn lights, so the nights are VERY dark. On a clear, moonless night the stargazing is excellent (bring your telescope). We have bird and deer feeders to encourage wildlife viewing from the 32ft porch or out the windows - please keep dogs leashed so they don't chase the wildlife. There is a firepit with 4 chairs, ideal for marshmallows or hotdogs. There are charcoal and gas grills for outdoor cooking. Inside the cabin is a full-size fridge, stove, laundry center, pots/pans/utensils and dishes. The pillow top queen size bed has linens, blankets and pillows, as does the twin bed in the nook. We also have one twin air mattress available, for rent. You can enjoy exploring our property and the many, many state parks in the area; however, for longer stays we make a good midway point for day trips to Nashville (about 90 min), Chattanooga (about 90 min) and Lynchburg (about 60-90 min). Our free-range chickens allow us to offer a limited number of fresh eggs, availability varies during the year - please keep dogs leashed for the safety of our livestock. You may also meet our Diva Goat Misty who likes to visit, so we ask that you keep your dogs leashed. You will be near our brew shed/classroom. My husband brews and we are working on offering some basic classes in a variety of areas from kit brewing (all grain or extract), making marshmallows, food preservation, gardening and aquaponics. If you are interested in classes, please let me know so I can have supplies on hand.
We are dog friendly, but please let us know before your arrival so that I do not have Mitsy or one of my dogs with me during the greet. Visiting dogs are always SUPER excited with all the new smells and we don’t want to add to the chaos. We also ask that you bring a kennel in case you need to leave your dog unattended during your stay. Separation anxiety can be costly. We are in the woods - there are ticks/mosquitos (seasonal), as well as deer, bobcats, coyotes, squirrels, turkeys, etc. These are chase worthy when spotted and some are dangerous, so please keep your dog leashed. If your dog uses "pee pads", please be sure to thoroughly clean up any "misses or oops". If you don't or have a male that marks my blankets, furniture, baseboards, etc, you will lose your damage deposit.
Altamont/Beersheba Springs is a small, quiet mountain area located on the Cumberland Plateau. We are part of the Appalachian Mountain range but NOT the Smokey Mountains. The pace is slower, and the conveniences are limited. We are VERY rural, so please keep that in mind. The nearest fast-food chain is 35 mins away, although there are local places to eat that are closer (most closed Sunday). Our awesome Dollar General Market has a nice selection of fresh veggies/meat and is usually very well stocked; however, Walmart, Kroger, etc 30-40 mins. If you are a picky eater or have strict dietary requirements, please keep this in mind. Most of the "to dos" are physical, hiking, rock climbing and so forth; however, stargazing, the Coalmont OHV park (BYO off road vehicle), concerts at the Cavern, visiting Gnometropolis, playing the available board games, relaxing on the porch and just wandering around the area/property are also popular. There are a number of craft fairs that are in the area throughout the summer/fall. At the end of Aug, the Beersheba Crafts fair is one of my favorites. The Mountaineer Folk Festival at Fall Creek Falls in early Sep is a close second. Our peak fall leaf colors are USUALLY around the middle of Oct. Book early if you want one of these weekends!! See you soon.
