Wine/Bourbon Trail Carriage House, Cozy, Clean, Hiking, Shawnee Nat'l Forest,

Where 1892 meets modern luxury in a vacation rental located in Alto Pass, Illinois. Havisham House has two homes on the property... the Carriage House and Main House. We are in the heart of the southern Illinois wine trail, and just a few miles from Bald Knob Cross and amazing hiking/biking trails. Located adjacent to the Carriage House is Havisham Bourbon, Brew & Spirits (food, wine, beer, cocktails & over 300 whiskies in stock).
The main floor of this cozy Carriage House offers a bedroom, full bathroom, kitchen and living room. Downstairs has a larger bedroom, full bathroom and an exit to a private outside patio area.
Why did we name it "Havisham House"? Have you read Great Expectations by Charles Dickens? Main character, Miss Havisham, lived in the Satis House, a ruined mansion. This property immediately reminded me of this classic novel when we found it in 2015… abandoned and heavily damaged from a severe tornado. (Please see "before" pictures at havishamhouse.com.) Even with its extensive damage, we fell in love with this property and had "great expectations" for its rescue. We think you will truly enjoy your stay as you make wonderful memories in southern Illinois. We know you will love Havisham House as much as we do.

Unique house and area
Southern Illinois is a beautiful area for scenic drives and hiking, wineries and breweries, etc. Havisham carriage house is unique with its history and old thick walls; carefully restored. It is comfortable and functional. We enjoyed the patio and, in cooler weather, the ready to go fire pit would be perfect. A few steps up the sidewalk is the bourbon bar. The bar tender knows her craft! The Bar Bites were excellent. Just be aware of hours of operation for all businesses in the whole area. The toiletries are minimal and very basic so you might pack your preferred items and kleenex. The kitchen is minimally stocked with dishes for 6 people, 1 skillet and one sauce pan if you plan to do any food prep. We enjoyed Midlands, The Brick House Grill, and the 51BBQ in Cobden. And don’t miss brunch at The Iron Whisk. The taco place in Cobden is good and very popular.

Highly recommend!
We choose this place for a central location to do the wine trails. A wonderful venue with beautiful grounds. Big house would be a great place to stay as a large group. Adorable small town vibe and close to Murphy and Anna for needs. Ample kitchen amenities, might need a few additions but you could get by! Would 110% stay here again!

Great little getaway
We had a nice time. We thought we would get a little more hiking in but the ground was a bit too mushy. Just that time of year. The bourbon bar was a nice finish in the evening. Thank you very much for a cozy stay.

Beautiful homes in the country.
A really cool pair of classic old timey houses that have been impeccably restored. We chose to stay there because they are located close to friends in Alto Pass but would be great for anyone wanting to experience rural Southern Illinois!

Carriage House
This is such a cute place! It's close to Shawnee Forest for some great hikes. There's a small park across the street for kids to play at as well. We didn't find too much to eat close by, but we brought lots of food and snacks to keep us happy (we visited during the off season, so this might be different during summer months). We would absolutely stay here again if we come to this area.

Awesome clean experience with friendly staff!
The Carriage House was beautiful. It was clean and provided everything we needed. We had a little trouble getting the door unlocked to get in but it was a simple fix! I called Jeri right away. She was friendly, helpful, apologetic and corrected the situation successfully within seconds. Upon leaving, locking the lower door was incomplete because the handle kept spinning. Overall, EXCELLENT!! Would go back in a heartbeat! Jerri was great to work with!! The house was beautiful and comfortable!

Quaint, as advertised!
We had a wonderful week staying in the Havisham guest house. Was clean, comfortable, roomy. Plenty of room for the 5 of us...and the AC made it worth not having to camp in southern IL in 90 deg heat! Kithchen had all we needed for preparing meals. Dining options were limited in Alto Pass, but a quick drive to Anna provided grocery and all kinds of restaurant options. Made day trips to Garden of the Gods, Vienna, Metropolis, Little Grand Canyon, and of course the wine trail...wish we could have seen more. If we make our way back to the area would def stay here again.
