This spacious seventh floor apartment, where we enjoyed 9 weeks, lies a block from Parque Calderón, which is the heart of the carefully protected, beautiful yet dynamic UNICEF World Heritage historical district where Cuencanos and visitors mingle.
While the building door opens north onto a bustling commercial street, the apartment faces south, away from the street, and is therefore very quiet at night. As lower floors are mainly offices, they too are silent at night. And there are no barking dogs nor roosters, although birds and church bells will awaken you each morning.
The building, being older, has some quirks, but the elevator works well. Security is achieved by a series of locked doors and a helpful doorman 7am-7pm.
The view of the city and hills out over the red-tiled roofs, past the Old and New Cathedrals and up to Turi heights beyond is usually greeted by guests with an awed “Wow!”.
Everything you can want - Rio Tomebamba for walks, parks, gyms, first rate ice-cream, museums, galleries, theatres, groceries, pharmacies, Coral department store, restaurants - everything is less than 20 minutes’ walk away, and most are very considerably less.
The beds, reclining sofas, and chairs are unbeatable for comfort, the kitchen is well equipped and there is more storage space than you can possibly use!
The owners did everything in their power to make our stay enjoyable.
We plan on returning.
