Accommodation In Dar es Salaam

Welcome to Dar es Salaam! If this city wasn’t on your holiday radar before, it should be now, as this once-sleepy fishing village offers a mix of African, Arabic and Indian cultures, architecture and cuisines, and beaches that rival better-known destinations in neighbouring Mozambique and Kenya. Accommodation in Dar es Salaam is geared to all tastes and budgets, from basic to luxurious, and wherever you stay, you're in pole position to explore this fascinating pocket of Tanzania.

Things to do in Dar es Salaam

If you're an early starter (or particularly late finisher), get to the Kivukoni Fish Market on the northern harbourfront about 7 a.m. for a look at traditional life (and food!) in Tanzania. Fishermen dock their sail-powered dhows at dawn to haul their catches ashore, where they sell them with great gusto until every last fish is gone. As an aside, you may or may not be surprised to discover the main waterfront road the markets are on is called Barack Obama Drive.

Head north up the Msasani Peninsula to Coco Beach, a long stretch of palm-fringed coast that's popular with locals and tourists alike. It comes alive at weekends with a fun and family-friendly vibe. Enjoy food stalls, cold beer and live music in the evenings—whether you intend to party all night or just relax with your chums, you’ll find something here. The area is also home to some fine Dar es Salaam hotels and resorts, so you won’t have to shamble far to your room.

Cut across the peninsula to Slipway for a short ferry ride to Bongoyo, an uninhabited island 2.5 kilometres from shore. Discover great snorkelling and hiking before gorging on delicious grilled fish under simple grass shelters.
