A large heard of deer along with their new born fawns. The majestic wild turkey will let you know he is around with many morning gobbles. . At nights you will see a million stars as you sit around the rock campfire outside. WE ALSO PROVIDE ALL YOUR FIREWOOD for the campfire/ fireplace. The wood is a mix of white and red oak and some cherry mixed in. So you don’t have to worry about having to buy any! There is zero light pollution. You may even hear an occasional coyote howling in the distance. We also have cows grazing the fields munching grass. ..Note... there are no bulls ...There are steers and females only. Visitors at the end of July will find thousands of blackberries to pick.

This home is located in the heart of syrup making country! It’s approx 5 miles from McDowell and 14 miles from Monterey and will be available for to rent for the annual Highland County Sugar Maple Festival. The farm is also located approx 3 miles from the national forest. Their are many local trout streams to fish which include the calf pasture and bull pasture river. Also many smaller local native trout streams. I know where all the honey holes are for the trout..;) Or you can visit the Virginia Trout Company in Monterey for Rainbow and Brook Trout, also the Sugar Grove trophy trout ponds. There is also another native trout steam that I can tell you about , but count on it being an all day trip! The small town of McDowell has a home town grocery store (Stone Wall Grocery) they make fresh sandwiches/ home made biscuits and barbecue daily. There is also a small gas station just up the road that is famous for its fresh cinnamon buns. McDowell also has “Sugar Tree Country Store “for maple syrup lovers. Monterey also offers a wonderful dining experience at the Highland Inn. They also have a quaint restaurant called “Highs” with down home country cooking if that is your fancy.

Fall and Winter guests will wake up to brisk cool mornings with fall foliage. Our farm has a variety of Oak and Maple trees that will light up the day with amazing colors. You also will see a variety of native apple trees. Some of these trees are over 100 years old and still produce an abundance of apples. You will notice a large variety of different apple types with over 30 native trees on the property. Black Walnut trees are full of fox squirrels. There is also an old home on the farm that was built in 1916. The home is at an altitude of 2800 feet above sea level and at the top of our upper field , the altitude tops out at 3400 feet. So you will see snow! We have great hills for sledding!!!For skiers , the ski resorts of Snow Shoe and the Homestead are about an hour and a half drive from the farm. Many many things to do! But If you want complete privacy and just want to sit on the front porch with a cup of coffee, you have this as well. The farm is almost a mile off the less traveled small trail ( route 617) with a chain gate and a additional metal gate you will need to travel thru to get to the farm. Please note you should have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the property in the latter part of November and into the winter. Especially December and January.

This property has been in our family since 1979. The home was built in 2005. It is a very special place for me and my family to go and recharge our batteries from hectic work weeks. We are active hikers, hunters and paint ballers! We love the outdoors and would like to share our piece of heaven with you.

Our Paradise Mountain
Our Family recently stayed at this property and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect, private and beautiful location ! From the mountain views in the morning with coffee on the porch, to the evening firepit gathering roasting hot dogs and smores, to the fully stocked and furnished home, this was truly a paradise location for our busy family to get away to and decompress. So thankful for the wonderful host's communication and the fact they are willing to share this property for families to visit... We had one of the best times in recent memory !!

Gorgeous mountain views
Breath taking views. Our host was very helpful and communicated with keeping us updated on the weather & conditions especially since we were driving in while hurricane Helene rain and wind was going on. Wildlife, cows, apple trees, mountain fresh air, stunning views were phenomenal. Cabin was very nice with all the essentials needed. Look forward to going again soon.

Wonderfully secluded.
I really enjoyed the property. We were there four days and spent a lot of time on the porch, chilling and enjoying the scenery. The house was well equipped with plenty of kitchen, utensils, plates, cups, and glasses. If you are looking for a resort experience, it might not be for you, but we always look for a good place to chill for a few days at the end of our trip and it was perfect for that

Astronomy Delight
The house was comfortable, clean with all the amenities. Dish network and wifi worked well. There is no cellular service though which I was happy with and was expected. The area is mountainous, with beautiful views and remote. You can hear yourself think, no noise, no traffic, no neighbors. Saw a grouse, a black bear and many deer. The night sky was the reason for the visit and we were not disappointed. The Milky Way could be seen from horizon to horizon. For those astronomically minded think Bortle 2 with a SQM of 21.8ish. So, bring your telescope. We will be back.

Very pleasant stay
We found it to be ideal for a young family. The cabin itself is very nice and homely. There is a lot of wildlife in the area. There are lots of deer and birds. I have only seen the stars so clearly from a boat in the middle of the ocean. The area also has a lot of fun things to see in explore.

Star gazing
The cabin was fine, just a bit remote for us. Could text and receive email and be online, but no cell phone coverage (in case there was an emergency), but a lot of Highland County is that way. The gate was heavy to lift. The parked car took away the pastoral ambience of the cabin. The back porch could use an extra step because it is a bit high. Owner was responsive and helpful and took care of a problem. The main bedroom was very comfortable, as was the entire cabin. Kitchen was well stocked for cooking. Enjoyed looking at the stars since there was no artificial light around. A good getaway to de-stress.

Quiet and Secluded property
The property was on a very large acreage with beuatiful views of the mountains. If you enjoy hunting, the trophies displayed will interest you. The house was well appointed with a large variety of items for cooking which is important because of Highland County's low inventory of restaurants. The owner was very reponsive with questions we had. It was fun to see the cows on the property. Lots of bird songs which was delightful as we sat on the front porch with coffee or wine enjoying the view.

Fantastic Vacation Rental
My husband & I had our wedding the weekend we rented this. My family stayed there and the owners Steve and Lea were gracious hosts and agreed to let us host the rehearsal there. It was a wonderful place to have a rehearsal. Everyone who came thought the house was nice and the view was breathtaking and the cows and their calves added to the experience! My family enjoyed staying there. The house was clean and comfortable. We had record heat that weekend but Steve had an a/c unit that worked to cool the place well. He also has a special motorized fan in the ceiling help pull hot air up and out if the house. My family said they were very comfortable. We definitely recommend this vacation rental and will most likely rent it again in the future!

I'm a teacher and an oil painter, and I've been coming to Seldom Seen each June to decompress and do some painting. There is no better place for either activity. The silence and the pristine beauty of the Hollow is indescribable. My words or paintings can't do it justice. Go see for yourself!

The High Life
If you love nature and won't to removed from all the noise and lights of suburbia life, this place is the one for you. We spent 5 nights here and everything about it was perfect. Waking up to the calls of Eastern Whip-poor-wills and surrounded by the remoteness and quietness of Highland County. The outdoor fire pit was great for cooking and keeping warm when the night fell. A perfect place for our dogs to roam and relax. Loved everything this place offered and provided. An annual respite for us for sure.

Relaxing Remote Escape, Beautiful Views!
A very remote escape, perfect place to relax and unwind! Very clean, well appointed with necessities. Stephen is a super responsive host. (Thank you!) The weather during our stay was mostly rainy, snowy and cold - but we enjoyed the cozy fireplace and really appreciated the provided firewood. We had one clear night and loved the star filled sky! We walked the surrounding pasture land, beautiful views. Enjoyed a meal at the High Restaurant in Monterey a half hour away - worth the trip - but note that the little shops in town close early and have patchy hours. Tip: Follow Stephen's perfect directions he provides to the cabin - NOT googlemaps- that sent us down a road that turned into an undrivable overgrown grassy path.

We had a wonderful time getting away from DC for a few days. The property and the house were perfect for us. We did some hiking on the property, and we ventured out to some of the surrounding parks. Our only regret was that we were there during a full moon, so our stargazing was limited. But, we did get a beautiful moonrise!
