Backwoods Retreat
If you’re looking for off the beaten path, this is it! Very peaceful and lots of wildlife. Owners are on the property but you hardly ever see them. And when you do they are nothing but helpful & friendly. It’s a bit of a drive to some of the area parks and attractions but well worth it for the tranquility that this rental offers.

Peaceful and relaxing
We had a really nice stay at Backwoods Retreat. The property is private and beautiful. It is a great base camp for experiencing the activities in the New River Gorge area. There are several options like the New River Gorge National Park, NRG bridge, rafting, and fishing within a 20-25 minute drive. If you'd rather spend your time unwinding from the stress of daily life, you can stay at the property and enjoy the wildlife (lots of deer, turkeys, and songbirds), hike the trail up to the top of the ridge behind the house, or just relax on the porch or back yard. The gravel road to get to the property is maybe a little longer than you expect, but it is well-maintained and no problem to drive. Mike and Deanna could not have been more gracious and helpful. Mike and his grandson provided minnows for fishing in the pond, which our 16 year old son really enjoyed. The wifi worked well and provided connectivity when we needed it. Overall, we really enjoyed the stay and would recommend this to families or couples who need some time away from the daily grind or need a base camp while exploring the NRG area.

This was a great property, peaceful. In the morning and evening we looked forward to seeing the deers! The owners have a trail in the back that is worth exploring if you don't want to go far. The location is great too. Highly recommend this cabin.

Awesome Cabin
This is a wonderful cabin, it has a great view from the front porch the deer and turkeys wonder around and eat all day long. There is a fenced back yard with a deck and a camp fire area. The cabin was spotless. Overall a great place to stay.

Amazing place to stay close to all the hiking, sight seeing, rafting, and food. Super clean. Owners are great people. Abundant wildlife to see from the front porch. Fun fishing the pond. Lots of bass. Owner caught us some fresh minnows to use for bait. Hiking trails on property were great also. Would definitely stay again.

Very peaceful retreat near NRG park
We had a great stay. The on-site owners were extremely respectful. The location was close to the park locations while still feeling remote and peaceful - we woke up most days to +4 whitetail deer and the sound of bullfrogs. Great location and dog friendly. Would recommend.

Piece of Heaven in WV
What a wonderful property owned by fantastic and responsive hosts! Communication really was very efficient. The cabin size was perfect for our young family of 5. We enjoyed being to stay in the WV mountains while still being close to a host of activities in the area. We got the peace and quiet as well as the adventure. The fishing pond was also a unique amenity. Our girls have started fishing and they enjoyed trying out their poles here with the large mouth bass. The property owners' grandson even came out to provide pointers and even gave us bait (minnows) he has caught earlier that day for our use! Such a special time for our family on a beautiful property.

Great location for visiting the 2 state parks and national park in the area. The house was great. We would see deer and turkey multiple times a day not even 20 feet from the house. They have a trail you can walk on the property along with a pond you can fish in. Great experience!

Great stay!
We had a wonderful time and Mike and Deanna’s property. Was so quiet and peaceful and served as a great place to truly unplug in nature. The backyard was perfect for our pup as well as a larger pen to run and play fetch. The house was comfortable and well appointed with everything we needed to cook meals. Would recommend coming in daylight…beautiful drive but some twists and turns. Owners are on property but were very respectful of our privacy and very kind. Mike even caught some minnows for my son to fish in the pond. Relaxing and easy access to the park.

We wanted a relaxing getaway with hiking options for our family (including infant and dog) anmd that is exactly what we got! Everything was great! The owners were very responsive and even accommodated late date changes. The house was great with a large yard (including a fenced in back yard and a fenced in section of the field for the dog). Wild turkeys greeted us every morning which was a nice surprise. We arrived late and the house is along a dark gravel road so if you show late just keep driving (about half a mile past where my GPS ended) and you will find yourself right at a parking area.

Above and beyond our expectations!
Our stay at Backwoods Retreat was amazing! I will attempt to do it justice. The property is gorgeous! During the day there were deer, birds and all the beauty of the surrounding mountains. At night, the sky was filled with so many stars, it was hard to pick out even the most basic constellation. It is so quiet/peaceful! There is a hiking trail, as well as a pond to fish or just sit by and take in the beauty surrounding you. The house is perfect. The sofa/beds are comfortable. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, pots/pans, a crock pot, a single serve blender, a k-cup coffee maker and a drip coffee maker, a microwave and a dishwasher. The televisions have Roku. Service was never disrupted, even during a thunderstorm. The showers are nice sized and everything in the house was clean. The back yard was perfect and secure enough that we could let our dog out without worry. The deck is nice sized with a table and chairs. There was a nice sized grill and a fire pit with a nice supply of wood. The front porch is perfect and secured with a gate. There are several steps up to the front porch, but one could also walk around to the back door if needed (2 steps). The one lane gravel road that leads to the house was easy to navigate. Traffic was nonexistent. Above all, what made this house extra special, were the owners! They were always available but never intrusive. They were the kindest, most accommodating and genuine people I have ever met. This was a dream vacation!

Almost Heaven!
Actually, "almost heaven" might undersell this property! My fiancé and I were in the area to tour the newest national park, the New River Gorge. We found this property to be absolutely IDEAL! It's convenient, charming, incredibly-well equipped (Rokus in main bedroom & living room), and run by two of the nicest people we have ever met! The property is convenient to both the bridge and Grand View sections of the park. After long days of hiking we were able to grab take-out and enjoy it back at the house. However, we were even happier cooking in the full-size and fully equipped kitchen! I reached out prior to our stay to ensure we would be provided firewood during out stay. Not only did they provide the firewood they kept us fully stocked! We were able to use both the outdoor firepit and the indoor fireplace and never went through the wood they prepared for us. And I have to mention just how incredible the actual property is. In-spite of being very convenient to the park and town it feels like you're totally secluded in the mountains! The house has a wonderful view over the front lawn and backs up to a mountain with a hiking trail Mike showed us. And at night the stars stand out like no where else I've been. We really enjoyed watching for shooting stars while enjoying the fenced backyard with our dog. And that is another great point. The back yard is totally fenced and we had no concerns leaving our rough-collie out to enjoy the crisp fall weather. RECOMMENDED!

Perfect Fall Getaway
Very peaceful setting on the side of a mountain with a great view of the well kept property. The layout of the house was especially convenient with split bedrooms and bathrooms and plenty of room. There are lots of windows looking out on the forest. Nice fenced in back yard with a spacious deck. Deanna and Mike were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We really enjoyed watching the deer. We also enjoyed the private hiking trails up the mountain behind the house. Oak Hill is only a short drive away for groceries or to eat, and Fayetteville is not much farther.

Deer-Happy Retreat
My husband I stayed for three nights. Each evening (and one early morning) we watched the deer come out of the woods at dusk and graze for a good hour or more. We also saw a few turkeys. The long drive way is definitely long but worth it! The home was exactly as described and was quite cozy. The kitchen had everything we needed and the bed was comfortable. We met Mike and talked to him several times. He was extremely pleasant. He and his wife even told us we could check out late if we wanted because they didn’t have another coming right away. They live right next door but we didn’t notice them at all, except when Mike went to get the dogs. We weren’t far from the National park or the New River Bridge. Shopping and dining were also close by. We had a delightful time and would recommend this rental.

Beautiful & Peaceful
With the forest in view & the pond on the property, we had a nature retreat. The home is set up well for 2 couples, and the 2 bathrooms were a plus. Everything was clean & newer - comfortable beds and couch (often a rarity in rentals) the kitchen modern. There were 2 grills, spotlessly clean, one gas & the other charcoal, and a fire pit in the fenced back yard. Our host Mike was thoughtful and friendly, stocking firewood, and minnows for pond fishing - exceptionally accommodating. We enjoyed our stay & hope to return. Thank you Mike & Deanna.

Appalachia at its best
One home place down from the top of the holler you’ll find Backwoods Retreat. It’s a perfect getaway for anyone with a hankering to tour the New River Gorge National Park. You’re also close to Sandstone Falls, Babcock State Park, Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. Mike and Deanna, owners of Backwoods Retreat, have done a masterful job of setting up a home for a family or two couples. A bar makes a great place to eat a meal, conveniently prepared in the well-equipped and fully stocked kitchen. There’s a fireplace insert for crisp fall nights. For those who prefer hotdogs and smores prepared over an outdoor fire, there’s an outdoor fire pit. Firewood for either is provided. During our stay, we sat at the oak library table to play board games and cards. Early mornings found us on the covered porch watching deer and turkeys. Trails that crisscross the property can be hiked or you could bring your own ATV or side-by-side. When we were there, a black bear visited the pond down the hill from the house. On warmer days, you may fish. Don’t be surprised if Mike and Deanna’s grandson is on hand to offer tips to insure a catch.
