Bring earplugs or headphones

The hotel was pretty cool. We stayed in the annex motel. It was well decorated, comfy and clean. The staff were nice. Restaurant had yummy dinner. Our only complaint would be the noise. The traffic outside and what sounded like drag racing was a bit much when trying to fall asleep. I also wouldn't recommend looking up the crime rate in Gallup before bed. Everything that was within the hotel's control was great.

Worth a stay

The hotel itself is beautiful and the history behind it is amazing and a must see. Front desk staff was fantastic. The issue we had was the restaurant and the “ historian.” We had dinner in which I asked for red on my enchiladas, it came out with green instead. Told waitress and she brought it out with red ontop with Parmesan cheese ontop. Cut into it and all they did was pour red ontop of the green. Never seen that. Also, they shotlet patrons know it’s only a two drink maximum when they get there. Only was allowed two drinks. Since we were traveling we want to relax for the night. After dinner we came down to sit by the fire. But were greeted very rudely by an elderly man and the first thing out of his mouth was “there’s not any alcohol in those glasses?” Not even a “hi, my name is….” The bartender mentioned we could take our last drink with us to our room so we did and decided to sit by fire. NOT!!! So, the rest of the night we felt like we were in jail since we had to stay in our room to finish our drinks. By this time we were so frustrated with everything, we hung out in our room. We came out to look around at the hotel but once again the historian watched our every move. Ridiculous!! Very sad because the place is stunning and the history behind it is very interesting. We are from Albuquerque and know all about Gallup and the news it provides. Still worth a stop, but don’t expect too much from service in the food part.

Wonderful stay in Gallup!

This was a wonderful surprise! I booked the El Rancho because of the many excellent reviews it had received, but our stay was even better than expected. The property is beautiful and fascinating, filled with historic treasures. Dinner at their restaurant was delicious as was breakfast the next morning. All in all, we highly recommend it!

Absolutely enjoyed it and thought it was just fine. Old but historic. Stayed in main building, Rooms are small but adequate and clean. Great Lobby. Staff at restaurant was extremely friendly and food was good. It is New Mexico and the population is generally poor. Gallup is a corridor for migrants and trafficking but the hotel has security. We had no problems.

This is a retro hotel right on historic Route 66. Gorgeous lobby with a roaring fire. Little old fashioned at check in. Took longer than it should. they had luggage carts so that was good. The room was small and the bathroom tiny. Closet tiny. It worked if you did not have much with you. There was a desk and chair. Unfortunately the room was boiling all night long and no matter what i did to the thermostat it just kept pumping heat. I did not realize i needed to turn it off. We opened the window. We ate dinner and the waitress was not good. She got our order wrong and blamed on the kitchen. She did not listen or ask all the questions she should have. We are both Celiacs (meaning no gluten) we asked what was GF and she said she would ask then came back to take our order and we said well what is GF she said oh I forgot. Then the manager served our food and had to correct the mistakes. The problem was no staff seemed to really care if we were doing well or not including desk staff they were nice just not engaged. I would say this place is quaint and retro but better for a single traveler not a couple unless you make sure to book a bigger room. Another plus was security in the outdoor parking lot. So more good and bad. But very cool place.

Property was unique with history and charm, really enjoyed the fireplace in lobby. Only negatives were the room and bathroom were very small and the shower didn’t have great pressure, other than that, great place. I believe they have bigger rooms, if stayed again would book larger room and bathroom.
