Beautiful architecture, landscaping, and location
This is a beautiful, large house designed and constructed in the 1930s for a wealthy Hilo family. The main interiors are dark wood, with original custom bannisters and similar craftsmanship, and the furnishings are period-correct. The present owners have upgraded in various ways, including adding in-room air conditioning (we didn't need, but it was nice to have the option), retrofitted bathrooms, kitchen, wiring, and similar. The kitchen and public spaces are shared with other guests, which works because the interior of the house has various semi-private spaces where groups can sit, and many guests chose to go to restaurants for dinner, so there was no crowding in the kitchen. The owner supplies some breakfast materials (coffee, bagels, fruit). The house is across the street from the shoreline with a couple-minute walk to a public beach park with protected calm water. Snorkeling is decent and there can be turtles. The house is located east of the center of town, and access involves driving past the Port of Hilo support facilities, but the neighborhood get nice immediately beyond these. The owners live on-site and check in occasionally but in a helpful, non-intrusive way. An excellent experience.
