We LOVED our stay in Hopkins, and this property was fantastic.
Hopkins is what you imagine a Belize village to be - multicultural, beautiful, tropical. It is NOT developed and touristy like Placencia - here, you can eat at a touristy location or a local restaurant - you can enjoy the local outdoor market on the weekend - and you can also access tour operators.
This house was a very short drive from Hopkins, and perfectly situated on the Sittee River. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained, the property was safe, and the house was a lovely airy, bright home.
You ARE in a relatively remote, tropical setting, and if you have the right expectations going in, you'll have a great time. There ARE bugs, there is no wifi, cell reception is spotty at best. There are plenty of family games, a well stocked kitchen, a friendly caretaker, and the beauty of birds, iguanas and the jungle right outside your door.
This is the perfect base-camp for self-catered day trips. Don't miss the hike up Antelope Falls (in Bocawina Mayflower Park - 15 minute drive) - the view and pool you can jump in at the top are spectacular. Also don't miss a leisurely canoe trip up or down the Sittee River, which is right outside your door!
The caretaker was friendly and accommodating, communication with the host was prompt and thorough. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
