The space
The Waterfall Mill is the perfect balance between tradition and comfort, with its original stone walls and exposed wooden beams complimented by its modern and warm interior.
There are many different seating areas to cater for all your wishes. You can sip your morning coffee upstairs, looking down into the beck, play games in the downstairs snug, chat around the kitchen table or enjoy a glass of wine on the patio– the choice is yours.
It has been recently renovated and so the kitchen is fully equipped and user-friendly. The open-plan kitchen ensures that the chef is not left out and can easily shout for a hand with the washing-up. Also, the separate larder and utility room makes certain that the mess is contained. You are on holiday after all!
The mezzanine Honeysuckle suite is enclosed by curtains and has its own bathroom, making it an independent and luxurious master bedroom. The natural fibres mattress and sound of flowing water guarantees a restful night sleep.
Downstairs, the Goldenrod twin is filled with light and has panoramic views of the beck. The aztec curtains and pastel decor off-set the original stone-walls, making it a cosy nest.
Next door, the Dahilia double, looks straight down into the beck and the wood opposite. You can only see nature from its window. The spacious double bed and warm interior ensures a comfortable stay.
Outside you have your own garden, with a seating area and BBQ overlooking the Bishopdale beck. There is an option to swim, if feeling brave (there's even a Tarzan swing) and then you can zip back to warm up in the sauna. This is situated in the garden in a beautiful hut overlooking the beck . The 30 second dash back all become worth it when you start sizzling in the sauna.
When staying at The Waterfall Mill you can explore the Dales by foot, take on a wild swim, sit in a relaxing sauna, turn your hand to Salmon /trout fishing( ask for details)or just absorb the beauty of Wensleydale from the comfort of your private garden.
The Waterfall Mill really does feel as if you are co-existing with nature, albeit in luxury!

A brief note on the history of the Mill:
There has been a mill in West Burton since doomsday times (1086). With its dramatic setting next to Cauldron falls, William Turner painted this Waterfall in the summer of 1816 on his Northern tour of England. He named these falls as one of his favourites due to the beautiful setting and the veil like quality of the water as it cascades over a hollowed out ledge. It is possible to walk behind the waterfall which he thought was delightful.
The remains of the weir used by the Mill race can still be seen in front of the falls creating a natural swimming pool. An old packhorse bridge by the Mill adds to the charm of the setting.
West Burton has remained largely unchanged through the centuries with the same expansive village green, which still has an 18th century Market Cross, 13th century stocks and (a slightly newer) playground! There is no through road which adds to its peaceful and unspoilt atmosphere.
The present Mill has adapted through the centuries. It was substantially enlarged in 1825 and continued to mill corn until the 1920's. Also during this time the Mill building housed the Wensleydale Cheese Cooperative which was established to help local farmers' wives with production and sale of their cheese. There is a cheese stone in the garden dating back to these times.
The Waterfall Mill Today:
The Waterfall Mill has been newly renovated and has just come back on the market.
One of the best aspects of the Waterfall Mill is that you can access within 50metres one of Yorkshire's true gems: West Burton Village. Pick up supplies here in the village shop or family butchers. Enjoy a hot drink in the tea room or some pub food and drink overlooking the village green.
Some of Britain's best walking is on your doorstep. From low lying rich hay pastures, to stark moorland rising to craggy peaks, such as Penhill and Ingleborough. There are routes to suit all. The magnificent Aysgarth Falls & Bolton Castle are both walkable from the Waterfall Cottage.
There are excellent pubs and restaurants within easy reach. Nearby market towns and iconic villages provide a rich variety of shops and places of interest. Fountains Abbey, York and Whitby are also within reach as day trips.
Local attractions include:
- Wild swimming
- Salmon fishing on the Ure (please contact Grace).

Other things to note
-Guests swim at their own risk (the beck not a part of the property)
-The use of the sauna is also at the guests own risk.
-The Waterfall Mill is not appropriate for those who have mobility difficulties due to the steep spiral staircase. There is access down the outside of the building, avoiding the spiral stairs, but we think that the reduced access would limit the enjoyment of your stay.
-Babe in arms are welcome and children from 6 upwards. The property is not appropriate for any other children due to the risk of the open-plan mezzanine, the spiral staircase and stone floors. We are sorry for any inconvenience. Please come back when the little ones are a bit older. Furthermore, any babes in arms or children over 6 years old come under the risk of their parent/minder/ whoever is responsible for them.
-All pets are not allowed. Sorry for any disappointment.
