About this property
Guestroom des Muses, an immersion in 1900 French culture.
Come and stay in the vacation home of Pierre Juppet, son of a Lyonnais shoemaker and "inventor" of the Saint Raphaël aperitif.
La Grande Maison de la Villa Bagatelle is the property's main building. A 800 square rod private English park serves as its backdrop. As the vacation home of Pierre and Marie-Magdeleine Juppet in the Lyon region, it is surrounded by numerous outbuildings that form a courtyard and allow Bagatelle to live in a dream of autonomy: stables, kennels, bailey, hutches, carriage garages, workshops, orangery and heated greenhouse, janitor's quarters. There's also a billiard room and accommodation for Pierre's father and uncle.
The park and all the facades and roofs of the buildings are listed on the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques; the Grande Maison is listed in its entirety, inside and out.
Furnishings and decor:
Your room is furnished with authentic pieces from the finest workshops of the early 20th-century French designers who invented Art Nouveau. They alone justify the appellation Hôtel-Musée.
The interior decoration of the Grande-Maison.
The architect Pierre Curieux, who built the house, opted for eclecticism. This was a movement characteristic of the late 19th century, which sought to take the best of each decorative style to organize an encyclopedic quintessence of good taste. The pieces range in inspiration from Louis XV to colonial Orientalism and Art Nouveau. The latter came to maturity and public awareness with Hector Guimard's Parisian metro stations installed in 1900, just as the Bagatelle building site was getting underway.
The entrance hall is designed as a courtyard, with its pink stucco architecture, bird-crossed sky and mosaic paving typical of early 20th-century villas.
The staircase leads to your bedroom, and the guest lounge is on the left, facing the garden.
The grand staircase is one of the highlights of the house; like the hall, it simulates exterior architecture, with a painting that evokes Constantinople and a stained-glass window that transports us to the banks of the Nile.
Leaving your room, it's time for breakfast.
You can choose from three breakfast options served on the ground floor, in Pierre Juppet's smoking room. This room was later the office of Robert, Yves and Matthieu Chauvin.
During the Second World War, it was the only heated room in the house, thanks to its fireplace where a wood fire burned all day long.
Living at Bagatelle
We've taken the gamble of immersing you in a 1900-1920 world. As many elements as possible have been repaired, recycled and sometimes rebuilt using original materials and techniques: re-use of old parquet flooring, beeswax finishing, linseed oil paint on woodwork, antique curtains, museum-quality furniture. Original sanitaryware and fittings have been restored. These objects and materials have often been taken out of our everyday lives. To come to Bagatelle for a few nights is to be surprised and ready to relearn the attitudes, gestures and attentions of our grandparents.
