Happy Trails: woodland retreat with sauna and deck

Summary:
Happy Trails is a log-framed cabin with wrap-around porch and sauna, located in the Upper Methow Valley, close to the outdoor adventure hub of Mazama. The home is well furnished and thoughtfully equipped for vacation stays, with 3 three bedrooms plus additional sleeping-berths on fold-outs and sleeping sofa. Situated on 9 acres of woodland shared with two other cabins, these are among the few area vacation rentals with private riverfront on the property (250 yards from the cabin).

The Space:
Happy Trails has an open floor plan, radiant floor and stove heat, and vaulted views of the woods and Goat Peak. Built with timber felled and milled on-site, this home is uniquely suited for families with children and well-behaved pups. The shared woodland acreage provides seclusion and space for kids to play and explore, there’s even a swing and tree house. Not only does this cabin have great trail access, a wrap-around porch and its own woodland, it has a sauna for your après-ski, hike or bike relaxation.

Downstairs is the open plan living room, with 2 sofas (one is a queen hideabed) and an easy chair (seating 7 in total), well-stocked kitchen and dining table (seating 7). Also on the ground floor is a queen bedroom, a kid’s bedroom with a bunk bed and 2 chairs that pull out to single beds, and a ¾ bathroom. There is ample space in the entry way for boots and coats. Upstairs is the loft rec-room with another couch, and the master bedroom with king bed and ensuite featuring a jacuzzi full bath.

The home’s amenities include: more than 200 movies, stereo with AUX input, wireless Sonos speaker, WiFi, gas BBQ, washer/dryer, porta-crib, high chair and personal touches throughout. The cabin also features a dry sauna (in the detached ‘sauna shack’) and a wrap around deck.

Happy Trails sleeps 7 in beds, and an additional 3-4 on fold outs and a sleeping sofa (maximum occupancy is 10). The sleeping arrangements are as follows:
- Bedroom 1: King Bed
- Bedroom 2: Queen Bed
- Bedroom 3: Kid’s room with bunk bed and 2 folding chair that folds out to a single-sized bed
- Living room: Sofa folds out into a queen sized bed
- Loft area: There is a large couch that is not a foldout, but has a flat cushion with no seams that can be used for sleeping.

The Neighborhood:
The home sits within 9 acres of pine and aspen woodland (shared with two other cabins), with 500 feet of riverfront on the property. Located in the Upper Methow Valley just across Highway 20 from Freestone Lake and the Methow Community Trail. The cabin is set back 100 yards from the road. The community trail connects to nearly 200 km of Methow Valley's groomed trails for cross country skiing and biking. The cabin's property borders the Early Winters Forest Service property providing extra acreage along the river to snowshoe, play, and explore.

It’s a 17 minute drive to the Cutthroat Lake trailhead, 19 minutes to Washington Pass and 25 minutes to Maple Pass trailhead (*drive times according to google maps), making this one of the closest rental cabins to the North Cascade National Park with its many world-class hiking trails. Ideally located for beating the crowds and snagging a trailhead parking spot at peak seasons.

The Mazama Store, with its great bakery and ‘a little bit of everything good’ is just a 5 minute drive or 10 minute bike ride from the cabin; around 20 minutes by ski (depending how fast you slide and glide). Mountain bike and ski rentals are also available in Mazama.

The old west town of Winthrop is 15 miles and under 20 minutes drive down valley, with its great shopping, bakery and dining establishments; the Shafer Museum is also worth a visit to learn about the local history. Winthrop has a fun ice skating rink and is the jumping off point for Methow Rafting’s raft and float tubing on the Methow River. Winthrop’s annual calendar of events includes the Rhythm and Blues Festival, Vintage Car Rally, Memorial Day Rodeo, and Christmas At The End Of The Road (check the town’s website for details).

Getting Around:
Getting here: May to November, from Seattle and the westside, you can drive over highway 20 and Washington Pass (check WSDOT for closures). Alternate, and winter routes from Seattle are via I90, Snoqualmie Pass and Bluett Pass, or highway 2 over Stevens Pass (check WSDOT for driving conditions). Combine these routes and you have the scenic Cascade Loop. Nearest major airport is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (247.0 miles).

Getting Around: it’s a 5 minute drive into Mazama. Winthrop is under 20 minutes drive / 15 miles south on 20. Methow Motion provides a private car service throughout the Methow valley. The Methow Community Trail is just over Hwy 20 at the end of the driveway from this property

Other Things to Note:

Triple J cabin and Mazama River House are also rentals in case you need space for a larger groups of friends and family.

Great location
Great location for hiking! This cabin had plumbing issues so we were moved to another cabin on the property. Management was great to work with. River access was great and overall worked well for our family. Would stay again.

Great place to stay
Loved staying at Happy Trails. Beautiful cabin with modern finishings and fantastic location. The hosts were super easy to communicate with and the check-in/out process was simple. Would highly recommend to any family looking for a trip to the Methow Valley. The listing says it sleeps 10, but it was just the right size for our group of 5 adult men. Plenty of twin beds and couches for kids though if your group is larger and willing to share beds.

Very nice cabin
The cabin was very comfortable, clean, and well-resourced (lots of reading material, kitchen was well equipped). There were some troubles with the heat that were unable to be resolved by the property manager during our visit, but it sounds like they were able to resolve this for future guests after our departure. We appreciated the open communication with the management team during our stay regarding this. Overall we greatly enjoyed our stay and would recommend for other guests.

Beware anything unplanned - purchase travel insurance!
The house and property were great. But beware, the agreement is extremely rigid. A few weeks before our trip, the North Cascades were closed due to fires. As that was the purpose of our trip, and with health concerns about the air quality index (AQI), we attempted to cancel our trip. We were informed that within 30 days, the only way the cancellation would be accepted was if evacuations have been ordered, or if the AQI TWO DAYS BEFORE the check-in date is above 200. Even then, no refund or partial refund - you may reschedule your trip within 6 months. Within two day of our check-in date, things had cleared up, so we felt obligated to go, but were still uneasy as the park was still closed and fires both in the park and Canada were raging unchecked. We stayed 2 days out of the 5 that we had reserved. During those two days, we learned that a red flag warning was in effect which recommended 'taking action', and that AQI was supposed to increase. We never heard anything from the owners or management company about any of this. Feeling unsafe, and questioning if we would even be notified if an evacuation had been ordered, we notified the management companty we were leaving. The AQI for the remaining 3 days of our scheduled stay were in the high 300's. Two weeks after our trip, we have yet to hear any response from the management company about a refund or partial refund for the 3 days that were not used, or even the possibility of rescheduling. Disappointing to say the least.

Fantastic cabin!
Loved this place! Lots of fun little details and nods to keep you amd your family entertained and relaxed. Beautiful place, property and area. Great access to the Methow Trail systems, about 45 min east of North Cascades National Park and a short drive to the Mazama Store. Only real thing that could be better is the river access path is overgrown and it's two bridges have collapsed, so getting to the river was tricky and pokey.

Great way to disconnect!
The Happy Trails property is really well stocked with quality kitchen stuff and those spices you forgot to bring. It was like a good friend invited you to stay at their place for a long weekend. The sauna came up to temperature nicely, just read the well laid out directions. The location is incredible and peaceful. Definitely one to return to.

Very restful
This place is so well situated. The big back porch stays in the shade from the summer sun all day long. There is traffic noise from Hwy 20, but you feel rather shielded from it since the hanging out areas are on the other side of the house. Beautiful woods and river.

Great place for a family
We had a great time staying here. The house was comfortable and well appointed. We have two kids, 2 and 5, and they loved having the toys, games, zip line, swing, etc. We were only there for 2 nights, but enjoyed some beautiful hikes in the area. Great place, and we hope to come back.
