Holidays To Medan
On the north side of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island, the city of Medan is waiting to surprise you with outdoor excursions, fun markets and thousands of years of history.
Check out ancient shrines and age-old museum artifacts or take a hike through wild rainforest, then return to the present day at lively karaoke bars or laid-back lounges. With mountains to the west, beaches to the east and plenty of entertainment wherever you look, Medan packages are sure to fit your holiday bill.
Things to Do in Medan
Vihara Gunung Timur, south of downtown, is the largest Chinese Taoist temple in town (and perhaps on the whole island, although no one has actually checked). Even the huge, dragon-adorned incense burner in the entryway is impressive. Like a challenge? Complete the 17 stations inside and you just might receive health and prosperity on your Medan holiday. Outside, the courtyard has great views of the Babura River (can you find the Buddha statue?).
The Tjong A Fie Mansion is a temple of a different kind: it’s dedicated to wealth! Tjong was a merchant and the richest person in Medan in the 1920s—and he didn’t hold back when it came to his digs. There are 35 rooms, painted ceilings and beautiful Victorian, Chinese and Malay influences. Imagine yourself sitting down to tea in with antique, hand-painted tea sets, then waltzing in the upstairs ballroom.
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
Ramai Market, east of the city centre, is the town’s biggest all-day market. This is your one-stop souvenir shop: ginger ting ting jahe candies for the office, gorgeous batik fabric for the in-laws and a hand-carved congklak set for your shelf at home (it’s one of the oldest games in the world!). Prefer your shopping air-conditioned? Just 1 km west is Centre Point Mall, one of the city’s newest and best places to find brand-name chains and deals.
If you’re not too full of fresh jackfruit, Medan holidays have plenty more food to offer. This Southeast Asian melting pot has all types of cuisine. Kampung Keling (Madras Village) is the city’s Little India, where you’ll find delectable curry, naan and more. Merdeka Walk, near the city centre, is the place to be for street eats. And for supper (in Indonesia, that means late-night snacks), head to Jalan Semarang to fuel up with classic nasi goreng fried rice—or more adventurous foods like frog and snake.
If you need to work up to those late-night munchies, no problem. Holidays in Phuket may have the party reputation, but Sumatra’s biggest city is no slacker. Medan holiday packages near the Merdeka Walk will put you near nightclubs, billiards bars, karaoke and classy wine bars where you can sip the night away. If you’re craving live music, Medan hotels near Jalan Putri Hijau are where it’s at.
