Casa dos Côtos | Peneda-Gêres National Park | Castro Laboreiro
Description:
Casa dos Côtos is an old single-family building, acquired by its current owner in a state of almost complete ruin and restored by him in respect for the original design, having been licensed for tourism in rural areas in 2018.
The materials and elements that make it up are those of the region, such as granite and wood.
The denomination found to make it known had its genesis in the fact that it is based, in all its limits, on an agglomerate or rocky mass, which the locals call 'côtos'.
The building extends over a ground floor or basement (where a small local grocery store once operated, a space limited by the surrounding rock, thinned by several metres to make it possible to form the current area, kitchen, living / dining room and service toilet), the top floor, integrating three bedrooms, all with private bathrooms, and the attic, intended for games and leisure space.
It has openings that allow you to enjoy the surrounding idyllic landscapes, towards its four winds.
It is located in the village and parish of Castro Laboreiro (which was a village and county seat between 1134 and 1855), in the municipality of Melgaço, on the northeast slope of the Serra da Peneda and on the west slope of the Serra de Laboreiro, in territory that borders neighbouring Galicia, Spain.
Situated in the picturesque setting of Branda de Castro Laboreiro, the building is a witness to the past and present of this charming region, in perfect harmony and framing with the majestic mountains of the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
Located next to the Castro Laboreiro Museum, and a few metres from the library and the tourist information office, this house is a cosy refuge that combines history and contemporary comfort.
The traces of the local architecture are preserved, maintaining the authenticity and the connection with the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Upon entering this restored stone house, one discovers a charming interior that combines the charm of the past with modern amenities. The spaces have been carefully designed, with a decor that enhances the rustic and cosy style. Solid wood furniture, wrought iron details and natural materials create a cosy atmosphere, inviting guests to relax and enjoy moments of tranquillity.
The house offers a variety of amenities to ensure maximum comfort for visitors. The fully-equipped kitchen allows guests to prepare delicious meals, choosing to consume local products found nearby (such as the famous Castro Laboreiro ham, sausages, cornbread and honey). The living room invites you to socialise in front of the fireplace, perfect for colder days. The privileged location of this restored stone house is also an invitation to explore the surroundings. The Núcleo Museológico de Castro Laboreiro, located a few metres away, offers a dive into the history and culture of the region, providing a deeper understanding of its past. The nearby library and tourist information centre are valuable resources for visitors wishing to discover the natural and cultural wonders that surround this place in the heart of the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Just a few hundred metres away is the Rio Laboreiro, a course of clear, crystalline waters and waterfalls of unmistakable beauty, as well as a Roman bridge and the Castle of Castro Laboreiro.
Whether for a romantic getaway, a family trip or a solo adventure, this house is the perfect place to reconnect and explore the much that the region has to offer. Combining the charm of the past with contemporary comfort, the space provides an authentic and unique experience.
Castro Laboreiro is a magical place, one of the 'Villages of Portugal', and by staying in this space you have the opportunity to experience its unique spirit, in the context of imposing and breathtaking landscapes of the surroundings, which will certainly be registered in your memory.
Welcome.
