The district
Antonio's home is located in Messina, Sicily, Italy.
Located at the end of north-eastern Sicily, it stands at Capo Peloro, a hilly promontory where the reliefs stop abruptly about 1.5 km from the sea to leave a sandy beach: it is on this beach that Torre Faro rises, where the Strait of Messina reaches the minimum of its size and Calabria is only 3.6 km from Sicily. The name of the town derives from the presence of an important lighthouse, attested as a building already in Roman times and preceded for centuries by lighting points, which were used to help mariners cross the Strait of Messina.
Characteristic of the place are the refoli, vortices generated by the current of the Strait of Messina, which in past centuries animated the legend of Charybdis, a nymph with an insatiable voracity who for stealing oxen from her son Heracles, was transformed by Zeus into a monster that for three times a day he swallowed and regurgitated the waters of the straits, swallowing everything that was above or below the surface of the sea (including sailors). The lakes of Ganzirri and Faro are today two small ecosystems characterized by high levels of biodiversity and primary productivity, which makes them suitable for the exploitation of biological resources and in particular for shellfish farming, practiced for several centuries in both lakes. The area between Ganzirri and Punta Faro still remains one of the most interesting lagoon systems in Italy from a scientific point of view and is protected by a naturalistic and landscape constraint.
