If for around £50 a night, it's worth it.

Got it early for about £50 a night, which is about as much as I would pay for a holiday inn express. Not much in terms of facilities, it's your standard room with kettle and bed and a desk that defies all logic in its ridiculous design - not great if you want to use it as a laptop desk with keyboard and mouse etc. Food is adequate, though not a lot of choice. I also was ill with headache and nausea on the last day, can't tell if it was related to the hotel breakfast or not, but it's a contender out of maybe 2-3 other reasons. You can park your car relatively easy, and it's close to the convention I was going to. The design of the building though does mean you're walking a fair distance to your room and I was like at the far back on the 2nd floor, which made no sense given how early I booked my room, surely there would have been plenty available nearer the front desk area? They got a lift that is woefully slow, takes forever to open doors/move and it's constantly in battle with the housekeeping staff in the morning so you might as well just find the stairs and go down, except the stairs aren't even signposted so I had to ask! Does the job though as it is very clean, crisp and even though the heater doesn't work while you're out, it's about right for £50 a night. Any more and it's harder to justify.

We never stayed in a hotel in the UK before this trip, always in B&Bs. This was a lovely stay. The reception was a large open sitting area adjacent to a dining room for breakfast. A small bar was open beside the reception desk. Each staff member was kind, courteous, and patient with Americans who were unfamiliar with cultural differences. Housekeeping was very thorough and came to our room every day to make our bed, even when we did not call them..We did not request towels but we were offered fresh towels after 3 days, most hospitable. Since we were there in December, we were concerned about the heating, but we needed not to worry. Since we are from the Southern USA, we get warm quickly, so we dialed back the heat in the rooms and asked for an extra sheet to add to the bed, separate from the duvet. I would suggest that facecloths be added to the regular towels. Also, hair conditioner must be added because the hard water makes combing difficult. The rooms were a good size, but we were staying for 10 days, and HIE had no storage for our clothing for that many days other than 5 hangers for 2 people. However, as the room has ample room at one end for a chest of drawers, might I suggest adding one, even if one must walk around the bed to open it? Is it not better to have inconvenient storage than no storage at all? Breakfast was good every day! We hoped to do laundry ourselves, but HIE contracts it. Over 2 quid to wash a pr of socks?! Umm, no.

Family room booked. The sofa bed is uncomfortable. The bathroom had a very odd dual purpose door and one of the room lights was broken. Breakfast service was a shambles with the buffet not being refreshed in a timely manner (the cold drinks jugs were not refreshed and cutlery missing etc), nor the tables, seats and floors cleaned during service (we had to dust detritus off the seats we were directed to and the floor was covered with food). There was a room on our corridor with a police person stationed outside it for our entire stay which was also unnerving. One of the lifts was out of order during our stay. Front desk staff were lovely.

On arrival staff seemed a little 'put out' that we were checking in. All three were discussing their night before antics whilst my wife and i stood there awaiting a greeting. Eventually we got it and checked in ok. Breakfast was nice, however, the actual area of service is very small for the number of people using it. It made it very uncomfortable and not a great experience waiting to use the drinks machine etc with 20 other people. Needs looking at.

Nice overnight stay.
