City of neolithic origins, Modica is a Sicilian town included since 2002 in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites for its masterpieces. Characterized by the presence of “dry stone walls”, the prevailing style of its monuments is the late baroque, and in this regard, it is possible to admire the mother church of the city of Modica: the sumptuous Duomo of San Giorgio, a symbol of Sicilian Baroque. Not far away, the city Museo della Memoria hosts unseen relics from the Second World War. The city of Modica is also famous for the production of chocolate, it hosts the Chocolate Museum with sculptures and tastings.
To visit the city on foot is the best way to discover the artistic beauties and Modica’s old town. During summer there is a mini tourist train “Trenino Barocco” (little Baroque train) that connects the lower part of the city with the upper part, departing from the Corso Umberto I, in front of Duomo di San Pietro.
The airport of Catania Fontanarossa is about 120 km away, while Comiso “Pio La Torre” airport is 40 km away.
