We're local kama'aina, not big money investors from 'outside'. We had amazing vacations here before we made The Big Island our home. We want you to enjoy vacationing here as well! You Kama'aina? Let us know!

PRIVATE- We value your privacy! We live on the 6 acre property. We're close enough to chat with and far enough away for you to feel that you're in your own world.

NATURAL SETTING- We're nestled in the garden oasis of Fern Forest with views of Mauna Kea. Secluded yet not far from amenities/necessities.

UNIQUE- Our yurt is specifically designed to meet the needs of visitors who enjoy the east side of The Big Island. There's a large covered lanai (deck) surrounded by natural rainforest where you can dine and relax in a quiet, peaceful environment.

TEMPERATURE- Our elevation is approximately 2100 ft. which makes for cool nights and warm days. We average about 10 degrees cooler than the coast. There is a tinted domed skylight that you can open or close. There's no need for air conditioning due to our clever design.

LOCATION- Our location is a perfect home-base to relax after spending time just down the road in Volcanoes National Park, driving around the Island, to the Kona side or exploring Hilo. Hale Kipa Fern Forest makes for a great place to come home to!

A very special place!
We loved to stay in the yurt: the room is lightabd airy, with beautiful wooden furniture and floors as well as comfortable furnishings. At night the yurt is cozy and the setting in the Fern Forest is very special. We had the perfect location for both the Volcano National Park and exploring Puna. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. We would stay there any time again.

Quiet & relaxing in an amazing clean yurt!
We had a fantastic stay at the yurt! It’s quiet besides the welcome evening noises of nature. Stars are super bright and we spent hours on the porch in both sunshine and rain relaxing, reading and playing cards. The yurt is beautiful and super clean. Bed is comfortable, nice hot shower, and we have everything we needed. We were sad to leave and wished we had booked a few more nights. Super close to the Volcano national park for hiking, great Thai restaurant and little grocery in Volcano on the way home. I would stay here again and will recommend to friends/family that want to venture away from the Kona side. Hosts are extremely responsive, sent good directions and we felt welcome immediately.

Beautiful yurt in Hawaii
This was a beautiful off grid yurt in fern forest! Very nicely set up and comfortable and roomy still. We fell in love with this place! Definitely recommend. The hosts were also very accommodating and helpful with things we needed to know 💕

This was our first time in a yurt! We are a family of four and totally enjoyed the experience. The sunroof lets in a lot of daylight, the barbecue and outdoor kitchen table were very convenient, and the way it is divided up makes it feel very spacious.

We enjoyed staying at Hale Kipa Fern Forest. We toured from Volcano Village to South Point with plenty of time just staying comfy in the yurt. Very well appointed with obvious attention to detail. We'll recommend to friends visiting the big island.

Gypsy & Dawn are amazing hosts. Upon arrival we were greeted and welcomed immediately. They gave us a tour of the property including their solar powered battery array and catchment system. Staying here was such a great experience, I've never stayed in a yurt before but it was everything you needed and more. Zero carbon footprint, rain water that is filtered, I felt socially responsible staying here and it was close enough to everything we wanted to see including the volcano National park. I will definitely look at this property when visiting the Big Island again!

Amazing vacation spot!
The yurt was immaculately clean and perfectly cozy! We were looking for place to stay close to friends without having to drive to a hotel in Hilo. This beautiful spot is exactly where we wanted to be. The bed was so comfy and the shower was hot. It can get cool outside in the evenings in Fern Forest but the yurt stayed comfortably warm inside and cool when you open up the windows during the day. We were able to have our friends over to bbq on the large back porch. We also love how peaceful it is off the beaten path!

Loved every minute!
We've stayed at a lot of vacation rentals and this quickly became our favorite! Don and Gypsy have done an amazing job of making sure that the yurt was designed and stocked with everything you need. Staying in a yurt is a one of a kind experience and we enjoyed the enclosed lanai a lot of the time too. Both of them relaxing, clean and submerged in to the beautiful sights and sounds of Hawaii. Beautiful Yurt
We loved staying at the yurt. Don and Gypsy have seen to every detail and we couldn't believe how upscale everything was and how spacious it is. What an amazing value. The bed was so comfy, and we loved the big covered deck. It feels remote and private yet is very convenient to Volcano National Park, Volcano village, and Hilo. Don and Gypsy are very helpful and they provide a lot of nice amenities. We would love to come back.

Wonderful, unique lodging in a convenient location
Gypsy and Don were very accommodating during our stay. The yurt was modern and immaculate. The thought put into the furnishings and amenities was much appreciated. The location was so convenient to Hilo, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Waipio Valley. We only stayed two nights, but wish we could have stayed more!

Definitely an interesting place to stay. It looks like a tent, but it has 4 star amenities inside. Sleeps 4, comes with a kitchen, very well maintained and beautifully decorated. My favorite is the adjustable light through sunroof. Moreover, this place is eco friendly with solar power, instant hot water, fresh mountain air, lenai/sit out etc., Host is super responsive and friendly. Will definitely recommend to anyone looking for a quiet place to vacation/stay.

Fantastic place to unwind.
Don and gypsy are excellent hosts. The yurt is fantastic and well appointed. If you’re looking for a quiet place to go and be with nature. This is it. If you’ve never stayed in a yurt. Don’t be scared. You’ll love it. Well be back when we came back to the Big Island.

Really Enjoyed Our Stay at Hale Fern Forest
We booked Hale Fern Forest for a staycation weekend with our 2 teenage boys. We have stayed at 5 star resorts and my sons were most impressed by staying in a Yurt in the middle of a rain forest. Gypsy took care of all the details to make our stay comfortable. Gypsy knew they way to my sons hearts with a arrival snack greeting. When the Volcano National Park reopens this is the place you want to be. We will be back for a romantic getaway without the kids next time.

Best Stay Ever!!
My husband and I, along with our 2 boys ages 6 and 8, booked the Hale Kipa Fern Forest property just before the Kilauea volcano really starting erupting. I will admit I was a bit nervous about still going, but Gypsy was wonderful answering any questions we had before coming. As soon as we pulled into the property and walked into this beautiful yurt I have no idea why I was nervous at all! We actually spent the first 4 nights on the Big Island in Kona, and the air quality there was much worse than in Fern Forest. In fact, it was beautiful weather and wonderful air quality the whole time! I know that seems crazy, but is very true! Don and Gypsy were great hosts, and it was nice chatting with them the first time we arrived. We stayed 4 nights in this location, and it was in a perfect location to get to everything on the Hilo side of the island within a reasonable drive, as well as the sites along the southern part of the island. We were greeted with complimentary coffee that my husband and I enjoyed, as well as snacks that our boys loved to throw in the car and have handy while we were out and about during the day exploring. We loved the sounds of the frogs at night, as well as the rain hitting the roof at night. The bed was so comfortable, and you couldn't have asked for a cleaner accommodation inside and out. Our boys enjoyed the activities provided in the yurt such as coloring and card games, as well as the Roku TV. We ate some wonderful meals while we were out and about, but also grilled a couple of meals on the large lanai. Sitting out on the large lanai for a delicious breakfast before starting our day, or a meal at the end of the day after exploring couldn't have been more enjoyable. If you are hesitating about taking a trip to the Big Island right now, or booking this property...don't! I promise you won't be disappointed!

What fantastic accommodation. This yurt is fully decked out with everything we needed and more for a peaceful getaway. Don and Gypsy went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect and are genuinely lovely people. The yurt was spotless and immaculately clean, Gypsy has incredible attention to detail. The location was far enough away from the hustle and bustle and yet within a close drive to Volcano National Park and Hilo. Would have loved to have stayed longer and will be returning on any future trips to the Big Island. 100% recommend this place!

We came here during the lava flow in Leilani estates We were to stay there til the volcano began to flow We found don and gypsys place A beautifully crafted yurt With all the modern accommodations and wonderfully furnished It was cozy enough for us to feel as though it was our own home , but better 😉 Don’t miss out on not only their quiet and spacious yard but the opportunity to stay in a finely crafted yurt You will have very limited chances to experience and view the amazing construction of such buildings Much more amazing and memorable than staying in a square box of a room Thank you for them for allowing us the opportunity

Exceeded Expectations!!!!
This was by far the best stay that my family and I have ever had. The yurt was amazing and had everything that we needed plus more. I wouldn’t have changed a thing about our stay. Gypsy and Don were amazing hosts and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. I will definitely return if given the opportunity!
