Escape to Four Winds! Our remote, riverfront property is on the New River and within the boundaries of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Two miles from the Sandstone Falls boardwalk and a ten minute drive to Historic Hinton, the Southern Gateway to the New River Gorge. A great basecamp by the river for your Gauley season rafting adventures, Gauley outfitters are 40-1:15 minutes away.
Four Seasons of Fun:
Our location makes the house a great basecamp for four seasons of fun in the New River Valley.
Fall is an ideal time for hiking and late season boating while viewing the incredible colors of our fall foliage. The Hinton Railroad Festival is a 15 m drive, and a day trip to the Fayetteville end of the park for the Bridge Day Festival and to Gauley River outfitters is just over an hour. Fall is also an optimal time for fishing the New River Valley.
Winter guests often want to stay riverfront as they visit Winterplace Ski Resort. Weathered Ground Brewery is a popular choice for dinner after a day on the slopes. Bird-watchers will enjoy seeing the many species of ducks and other birds that visit the river valley during the cold weather months. Birdwatching from the porch is fantastic year-round- you will likely see heron and bald eagles, and may spot cormorant, osprey, and many other bird species.
Guests love the variety of wildflowers that blossom in the spring months and many find this the perfect time of year for hiking and early season raft trips. The Island Loop and Big Branch trails each start 2 miles from the house, and there are many hiking options in the area.
Summer offers endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, and is best known as rafting season in southern WV. Hinton outfitters, including Waterdawg Outdoors and Cantrell Rafting, offer affordable tube, kayak, and raft rentals along with shuttle. Spend a day making the hour drive to the northern end of the park to raft the New River Gorge or Gauley, see the New River Gorge Bridge, and visit the local shops and restaurants of Fayetteville. Summer is also the perfect time to enjoy the private riverfront lot at the house as you fish, float, swim, or relax by the campfire.
The house has a huge front porch offering exceptional river views. The private river lot located across the low-traffic New River Parkway from the house and is perfect for fishing, swimming, floating, campfires, and bird watching.
The Indoor Space:
There is a large master suite and on-suite with futon upstairs and four smaller bedrooms downstairs, making it ideal for large/multiple families or groups. The layout is also well-suited for couples or small groups who do not need the extra space.
The master suite has a king bed and a futon in the on-suite that folds out to a comfortable twin size bed. Three of the downstairs bedrooms are located together in a hallway off the foyer- the blue room with full over full bunks, the purple room with a twin over full bunk, and the pink room with a twin. The downstairs orange bedroom is separate from the other three and has a queen bed and a portable pack-and-play in the closet. All beds have bedding including sheets comforters, pillows, and extra blankets.
The kitchen has all the necessities- a stove, fridge, microwave, coffee pot, Keurig, crockpot, toaster, basic cookware and dishes. We keep the basics stocked- coffee, tea, sugar, olive oil, salt/pepper, and condiments in the fridge.
There is also a laundry room with high-capacity washer and dryer.
There is one large flat screen TV in the living room and a smaller TV in the on-suite, both with Direct TV. Free WiFi via Starlink is included, without it there is little to no cell phone service. We have lots of board games, cards, and books for you to enjoy.
Climate control is no problem with the whole house gas heat and A/C system. There are also backup gas heaters in case the power goes out in the winter.
The house was built for our family to live in, and we have been sharing it with guests since moving in 2016. It reflects our personal style and is not perfect or a resort. There are bright colors and quirky designs. If that sounds fun to you, we think you'll love the place!
In addition to the sleeping spaces inside the home, there is ample space for camping by the river or in the yard right beside the house.
The Great Outdoors:
The river front lot, across the low-traffic New River Parkway from the house, is large and private. There is an established fire pit, charcoal grill, hammock straps and a picnic table. Bring your camp chairs and your binoculars to spot the active bald eagles nest upstream at the the tip of Brooks Island. Don't forget to get out at night and look at the stars- the deep dark of the New River valley makes it easy to spot the Milky Way on clear nights.
At normal river levels, there is a large pool in front of the house with little or no current that is perfect for swimming or floating your watercraft. A well-established path leading to the river makes it easy to launch a tube, SUP, or kayak. There is no boat ramp into the river for a john boat, but there are multiple public accesses within a couple of miles. Local outfitters will provide guided fishing or scenic-float trips right to the house (send a message for more info). Inflatable kayaks, stand up paddle boards, and tubes are available for rent in Hinton. *Always wear a lifejacket in or near the New River.*
There is a basketball goal and tire swing in the yard and plenty of space to play, and there are games in the carport.
This is a great property for anyone looking to escape to the river. Send a message if you have any questions or would like to discuss rate adjustments, additional guests, events, etc. We look forward to hosting you!
Other Notes:
Guests have full access to all areas within the house including five bedrooms (one a master with on-suite and bathroom), living room, equipped kitchen, and lovely dining room with river views.
A building behind the house remains locked and off limits as it is where we store our personal items.
There is a keyed entry door lock on the front door, I send the code to guests a couple days before their trip . I appreciate your privacy and do not meet guests at the house or otherwise intrude on your vacation unless you request that I do so.
