This stately residence on Chesconessex Creek on Virginia's Eastern Shore dates to 1835. Known as Clifton the property was patented in 1668 to Colonel John Wise and was a plantation of over 750 acres surveyed. It is tradition that Col. Wise had built the first Clifton, naming it after his English home (A75B, pg 948 in Whitelaws). A graveyard exists today located NE of the house and contains numerous tombstones of the Wise family descendants.
