Self-catering rental with beach access, near Padstow.

The Red Buoy is an idyllic sunny beach apartment attached to a Victorian slate house right on Porthcothan beach. This beautiful beach has sand dunes, caves, rock pools, surfing and is fantastic for swimming and fishing. The coastal path runs right past the end of the garden with wonderful cliff walks, stunning views and great birdwatching. This apartment has whitewashed wooden walls throughout. The kitchen and bathroom have a conservatory roof and are very light and sunny. The kitchen shelves and work surfaces are hand crafted from hardwoods washed up on Cornish beaches. The double bedroom is like a ships cabin, with a lot of cupboard space and an ensuite bathroom (shower, basin and WC). The living room has a futon sofa bed, armchairs, table and four chairs, oil heater, maps, books and games. It has TV/SAT, DVD/CD and wireless broadband. The entrance is through its own private garden with a hammock, washing line, table and chairs, access to a laundry room, telephone and the local shop.

Sun Decks: The kitchen has a wooden deck just outside the door where you can eat at a table a chairs provided.
There is another wooden deck with a door onto it from the bedroom, a suntrap in the afternoon.

Loved it!
Our family of four (two boys aged 4-6) loved The Red Buoy - enough space and good that it’s separate from the main house as the kids weren’t quiet! I'd liked to have stayed longer to explore but most time was spent enjoying the lovely surf, beach and child friendly stream that runs alongside. We saw the best sunset ever on arrival as the bay faces due west. From reading the amenities list/reviews we were looking forward to accessing the beach directly through Glencoe’s enchanting wild garden, slate steps and driftwood gate - especially handy for quick visits to The Red Buoy’s toilet for our 4 year old and for carrying body boards. Instead we were a bit disappointed when Jane directed us to the beach via her driveway, main road and lane that runs past the shop next-door. Perhaps she was concerned about the kids slipping on the steps but we all enjoyed using the charming ones we encountered. The flat was cosily furnished with beach finds, comfy beds and country throws, a well equipped kitchen and good shower. The bathroom roof let the sun in to help dry swim wear. I loved Jane's artwork and 3D frames made from driftwood and wrecking items. No tv/phone reception but wi-fi worked and the boys were happy with children's dvds kindly provided, along with kids’ surf boards, plenty of loo-roll and local info. Jane is forthcoming and The Red Buoy is an absolute delight - we didn’t want to leave and would stay again in a heart beat, although we need to practise reversing!

If you are not looking for all the latest mod cons but are content to be close to the beach and coastal path this is a great place to stay.

You pay for the beach side location which is outstanding....accommodation which is decribed as 'quirky' is more like what was cheap 1970s student bedsit style accommodation... worn, run down decor and furniture....nowhere comfortable to sit indoors....Supposedly sleeps 4.... only if you don't mind a complete lack of privacy ... kitchen cramped and difficult to use... outdoor seating areas cramped and overshadowed by shrubs and trees - Expedia advertises it as having a hot tub....non-existant - parking entails reversing up a long narrow drive....access to accommodation from car is up an irregular and wobbly in places flight of stone steps. Disappointing accommodation but with a refurb it has massive potential.

Quirky and fun
Unique and arty - we came with our bikes to cycle along the Camel Trail and loved this hideaway, with its beautiful art-works and beachcombed wooden shelves. The steps up are not for the faint-hearted (though we're both in our seventies and managed it OK) and don't expect all mod-cons (eg a dish-washer). Very comfortable bed, well-equipped kitchen and lovely hot shower, though, and Jane was very friendly and accommodating. Porthcothan beach is on the door-step and the small shop nearby is useful for bread and milk. A great experience, recommended.

Brilliant , quirky , beach apartment
This place is amazing , birdsong , shaded drive up to a outside place that looks like a shipwreck (in a good way) the apartment is themed in a beach way , driftwood and beautiful paintings painted by the Owner Jayne . Is not the biggest place although it was just right for a short break with two 16 year old boys !!! The bed was comfy and the outside decking looks over the beach . I will say that the steps up to the property are difficult if you have knee or joint problems , it’s manageable but could prove difficult for the older generation . The beach is found just down the steps at the side of the property and it’s perfect . A little shack sells coffee and ice cream and the shop next to the property sells some lovely things including products from Clough Bakery , scrummy . All in all had an amazing couple of days and would definitely return . Thank you Jayne for a lovely relaxing time away xx

Peace Haven
The approach to the annexe is mysterious and surrounded by foliage and birdsong with the background noise of the waves. As you enter the property you are taken back to a time of basic yet adequate living with a quirky mix of modern rustic art (by the owner) and cosy vintage upholstery/furnishings. An instant peace and tranquility is felt with the excitement of knowing the beautiful beach is a stones throw away. The owner Jane is lovely and on hand for any advice or just a friendly chat and although the annexe is attached to her home the annexe feels private and separate . The check in and out times are perfect and combined with the location and the accommodation makes the stay great value for money.

Quirky Red Buoy Vacation
Lovely place, quirky, homely and a peaceful haven to get away from it all. There were a few things that needed attention but it didn't bother us. The property was well equipped. A security light on the steps up to the property wasn't working and it was very dark but Jane left her outside lights on for us for when we arrived back late. The hand rails on the steps leading to the accommodation could do with being more robust as it is very steep and the wooden handrail was rickety. There's a fabulous beach café immediately next door and having access to an amazing beach is absolutely wonderful. Jane went out of her way to be helpful and learning all about the beach and her late husbands beachcombing work was truly fascinating. There are bus services at the end of the drive and you can get into Padstow and Newquay by public transport easily. We will definitely return to this place

Amazing location and stunning beach
This property is wild and quirky. I write this review for anyone who has arthritis, joint problems, very tall or has a snoring partner. This is not the property for you. Both my hub and I suffer back issues and the sleeping arrangements did not work for us. This has NOTHING to do with the property itself more our lifestyle stuff. The futon I am sure works for most but not if you have back problems. The location is a dream and the garden a wonder. If I was 10 years younger I'd be back in a shot.

Beautiful beach hideaway
Characterful annexe at back of lovely Victorian house; no sea view from property but it is just half a minute's dash to the glorious beach. Jane was a wonderfully welcoming host and my daughter and I had a fabulous few days exploring the coast. The accommodation has some furnishings and decorations made from driftwood and the fruits of beachcombing, and Jane's beautiful original oil paintings hang on the walls. Altogether a marvellous stay -- we will be back!

Our short stay at the Red Bouy
We stayed at the Red Buoy for three days in June 2019. The accommodation itself is located round the back of the house and up some steep uneven steps: it was rainy when we arrived and we found the slate steps up to the annexe, as well as the decking to the front door, to be somewhat slippery. From the inside, the accommodation offers no scenic views, which we would have preferred, although the decked terrace out front offers a view of the garden and opposing hillside. The living room is pleasant and the furniture comfortable. There is also a table and chairs. The kitchen is small but adequately equipped, the full-size fridge/freezer was particularly useful. However the taps in the kitchen are fixed quite low to the small sink making both the sink and taps somewhat awkward to use. Also we found the kitchen heats up like a greenhouse on sunny days due to its having a polycarbonate sheet roof. We found the bed to be comfortable with good storage and hanging space in the bedroom. The bathroom was good: the shower had a strong spray, there was hand soap and toilet paper provided, as well as bath towels, but no hand towels. There was wi-fi, though it was a weak signal and dropped out intermittently. There is no mobile phone signal whatsoever. There was a file, in the living room, with useful information in it, that was very helpful. There is a long narrow driveway up to the accommodation that is best to reverse up, or, if the proprietor's car is not there, you can execute a five point turn, as reversing back out onto the road is potentially hazardous. The best feature of the accommodation, by far, is its close proximity to the beach: which is accessed through the garden gate. There are ten or more steep and uneven slate steps as you go through the garden. Had we known about this we may have considered not booking as one of us has mild issues with balance. Overall we found the accommodation to be quiet, clean and adequate, and we enjoyed our stay; however we are unlikely to be staying at this accommodation again.

The location can not be beaten, right on the beach of Portcothan Bay. It has great summer, beachie vibes and Jane is a lovelly host. Its a long way from where we usually live otherwise this would become our favourite weekend spot for sure
