HomeOnTheLava~ Ocean & Volcano Views ~Sleeps 8 ~ Momma’s Oasis

As of January 2021 the Solar System has been upgraded. This beautiful 3 Bedroom 1 Bath eco-friendly off-grid home was built on an old lava flow out of 3 cargo containers. But once you step in this home you will have no idea you were inside former cargo containers. It was built with quality and function in mind. There are 3 sliding glass doors for an incredible breeze and views of the ocean & old lava landscape. And out the back large windows a view of Kīlauea Volcano.
Property is comprised of 2 homes the other is a 1 Bedroom 1 Bath also available for rent that Sleeps 4 (See my other listing)

This beautiful shipping container Home was built on an old lava flow. It’s has clear ocean views, an expansive view of Kīlauea volcano out the back, it’s eco-friendly in so many ways, off-grid utilities (solar power and UV filtered water catchment), surrounded by amazing lava landscape, awe inspiring night sky filled with more stars than you have ever seen before.

The home possesses so many cool features. Typically if you have ever been in a “Tiny or Container Home” there is nothing spacious about them but through effective design I feel this was achieved as soon as you step inside you are greeted with an open feel 16’ by 16’ room. The first interesting pieces of furniture are the dining table & chairs that were recycled from an old Teak wood boat. Then there is the highly functional sofa that not only lifts up to provide storage but it also converts to a full size bed. You will also be drawn to the exquisite mango wood that was used for the countertops in the kitchen & bath. Once you see the pebble stone floored bathroom you will again be amazed at the size. Inside you find a one of a kind Petrified wood vessel sink sitting on a great piece of mango with a natural live edged mirror. As you will see in the photos you get to enjoy a rain shower in the large shower enclosure. Then pick any bedroom and you will find a platform bed that gives the sense it is floating that were custom made by a local Hawaiian. You will find this home was built in such a unique and quiet place you might not want to leave.

Please Note: The address that is showing on the website is for planning purposes. It is not exact but it is close due to the property being in a remote location. An exact map is sent to all guests prior to check in. Volcano National Park entrance is approximately 1 hour away, Pahoa is about 20 minutes and Kehena black sand beach is about 10 minutes away.

God has blessed me with this place so I can share it with others. Whether you are looking to be a tourist and see all the amazing sites or to just be at peace with yourself and nature this is the place for you.
There are NO Coqui Frogs to keep you awake at night here.

Surveillance Camera Disclosure: due to the remoteness of home and to protect the property we have installed 5 exterior surveillance cameras. Camera 1 Is mounted at the end of the deck with a view of the driveway. Camera 2 is mounted in the middle of the deck area with a view of smaller home’s entrance. Camera 3 is mounted at the other end of the deck with view of the larger home’s entrance. Camera 4 mounted at end of container home above the storage doors with a view of the water catchment tank. Camera 5 is mounted on the back of the property with a view of the propane tanks. They are not hidden and are obvious white cameras.
There are Absolutely NO cameras inside.

Unique location
We stayed with our kids (6,8) for 4 nights. We deliberately chose this location as we visited this region in 2009 when the Kilauea lava was flowing. To stay on top of the old lava flow was a special feature to show the kids. The location is very remote, the next shops a 15min drive away. A few more houses have been set up around the property, meaning we never had an encounter with the ‘grumpy neighbour’. The path over the lava field is quite easy to follow and was an interesting activity for the kids. The house had everything we needed and was nicely decorated. We didnt have any issues with water or electricity supply, the second unit was vacant during our stay. We didnt mind the 2 hour drive to/from the west coast, at times meaning to arrive back in the house at midnight but that’s something to consider when planning activities around the island. We’d happily stay at this truly unique home on the lava again.

Very cool home!
This unique shipping container home on a lava field was an unforgettable experience! While the surrounding neighborhood lacked privacy & was not completely dark at night for optimal stargazing, the overall stay was still enjoyable & worthy of 5 stars for its originality & cool factor.

Unlike anything else.
What a unique spot! When are you ever going to hang out in a lava field? We came to the big island in part to see the volcanoes and this was a huge part of the experience! Just as interesting as anything you will see at VNP. Walk down to the cliffs for the true experience. The house is fairly basic but it is clean and had everything we needed and enough space for two teens and parents. We managed to find it even in the dark. Amazing sunrises and rainbows. Would recommend since the location is so unusual.

Pleasant Stay
The experience of staying on an old lava flow was very interesting. You will get a better feeling for the area if you spend some time reading about the lava flows in the Big Island. Be very careful if you decide to walk on the old lava flow, and do not get close to the edge of the cliffs. The home was simple, functional and pleasant. But, I think the pictures on the site have to be updated as there is more wear-and-tear than shown in the pictures.

Unique and out of this world stay
This “house on the lava” is truly a fabulous experience! You and the stars and the lava rock can enjoy companionship! Our adult kids loved it. Photos on web site are true . outdoor photos cannot describe the lava setting. Super unique ! Bring your own drinking water. Everything else provided. We really enjoyed it!

An amazingly unique experience with some caveats
There is so much to love about this space. It is well laid out. The shower and bathroom are beautifully done with a great rain shower. The space is very unique and the surrounding lava flow is absolutely breathtaking to be on. Communication about how to get out to the ocean across the lava is well communicated and poles and planted palm trees delineate a clear path to take. The satellite internet works flawlessly and fast. The television seems to have infinite options with every streaming service available. However, now for some caveats: 1. This space can sleep up to 8 people, but that is very much where the support for 8 people ends. There are only 3 chairs for the table and maybe room for 3 people to sit on the tiny little couch. 2. The hot water heater is located near the main bedroom. While you should limit your hot water usage at night, there is another unit next door and all utilities are shared between the 2 units. If your neighbors are up at 4AM taking their showers, you will not be sleeping with the hot water heater boiling away feet from your pillow. If your neighbors decide to suck up all the power or water and it runs out, even though you were very sparing, tough luck. 3. The pictures may have been accurate long ago, but the surfaces inside have not held up well in the ocean air. 4. While the listing clearly shows a dryer, upon reading the guest rule book, guests are not allowed to use the dryer except for long stays. 5. This space is a long way from civilization.

The property is well kept and we had a great time while there. The host was responsive when we had questions about the TV. The extra bedrooms sliding screen door was warped a little so it didn't close tightly so we did not keep that door open so as to minimize any bugs being able to get in. There were some food items already onsite (condiments, spices, etc.) that would have been nice to know before we got there so we didn't have to purchase them so I would recommend pictures be taken ahead of check in and sent to the next renter so they know what is already there. The walk to the cliff is definitely farther than you expect but worth it. In order to stay on the property line, the white arrows should be repainted as they were very hard to see in some areas. We arrived after sunset and it was difficult to find the property, even with the detailed directions provided. I suggest putting something at the end of the driveway that can be referenced to better find the place and not pass it as it is set back from the road and easy to miss in the dark.

Really fun place to stay! accommodation was as expected. Amazing night sky and very interesting lava formations. Small suggestion - it would ben helpful to have information about if the tap water is drinkable or not. We didn't bring bottled water and probably should have.

Great memories
This place is great. You're far away from the nearest town yet can get there quickly. Night times are magical for star gazing. You have wifi, so you can make calls and text messages, and navigation works fine out there. We were a family of 8 that stayed for 9 nights and all felt comfortable in the space. It's off the grid but we didnt have any issues with water, power, or gas for cooking( and we washed clothes and cooked every day). It's a great home and our little ones love telling their frends the story of living on the lava flow.

Family time
We found the property, near the end of the road ( has a shared driveway). It was very quiet, even though the other homes are close. My biggest concern was the fact we would have no a/c, on a lava field(black) and close to no elevation. Once we opened the windows… there was no need for a/c, the wind kept the place very cool. It also meant we had to close the windows when it rained, so sleeping with the windows open was out of us. Overall we had a wonderful time. My kids played cards, we took a walk out to the ocean twice ( it is farther than it appears), went out to see the stars at night and watched the sunrise from the lava picnic table, one one of my kids serenaded us with the Ukulele. Great family time.

Lava life
We loved our stay. It’s such a unique place and the whole area feels otherworldly. The place was clean and well equipped. It’s definitely off the beaten path and not particularly close to much, but this is exactly what we were looking for. The place is really well done. You probably won’t even realize you are off grid. The walk out to the cliffs was unreal. In fact, as far as hiking in and around lava, we thought it was much cooler than anything in the actual national park, plus we had the whole lava field to ourselves. Our family of four was grateful for the opportunity to have such a different experience. I also met the “grumpy” neighbor. He was a really nice guy that mostly just wanted to make sure people respected the area and were careful on the lava. We give home on the lava 5 stars.

This is true an awesome experience staying on the lava field. So serene and peaceful, very spiritual for some. Amazing views of the ocean once you walk across the lava field. Wish we had booked it longer to explore more. Container home is very well equipped for what you need. The “grumpy” neighbor actually had a very pleasant but brief conversation with my husband and son. Would recommend staying here for the experience!

Highlight of our stay
Our night at HomeOnTheLava was my favorite place to stay during our Hawaii vacation. It is definitely off the beaten path. Closest amenities were a drive away. However, the location was stunningly beautiful. I cannot stress how gorgeous the sunrise was coming over the lava fields. And it was SO quiet! I could have reveled in that quiet for much, much longer. We met the afore-mentioned neighbor who politely enough asked us not to drive in his driveway. When we were a little confused as to which location we were staying, the manager contacted us back quickly and helped make it clear. The container house itself was comfortable for our family of 5. We didn't do any cooking while we were there, so didn't use much of the kitchen. We walked over the lava fields as directed in the morning which was a fun experience for all of us. My only regret about this listing is that we didn't stay longer.

An amazing, unique experience!
This place was such an enjoyable stay! Out on the lava fields, and it was so quiet and peaceful! Follow the instructions from the host to find the place…just past the mile marker he mentions. The only confusion was that he has two different homes here, but they’re physically touching, so at first glance it looks like one. When you first pull in the driveway, the home is on your left. Pull in front of the two white containers, and you’re there! Plenty of towels and cloths, lots of various plates, pots and pans, and utensils. Had a really interesting chat with Gary just down the road at Hot Foot Photography! This place was so much fun to stay at, and really glad we did! It’s a drive out to anything, so I would recommend just enjoying your time here, rather than basing out of this location to see other things.

Property was easy to find, even in the dark. We were respectful of property lines and had no trouble with neighbors. You will be truly off the beaten path, so plan accordingly. But it was worth it for our family to spend a short time on the lava flows. We will probably never get another opportunity like this again! Container home is starting to show a little wear, but still quite comfortable all things considered.

We had a WONDERFUL stay here (family of 4, kids ages 15y and 11y). It was really really cool to be on the lava field, the house is simple yet well furnished, the beds were very comfortable, everything was very clean and well maintained. The walk to the ocean was fascinating through the new lava. It was very fun staying here and we would highly recommend it!
