Finest Retreats | The Watchtower at Western Watch
Welcome to The Watchtower at Western Watch in Pendeen, Cornwall. This charming holiday property is a small and unique watchtower, perfect for two guests seeking a memorable getaway. The Watchtower offers breath-taking panoramic views of the surrounding fields towards the sea, and the iconic Pendeen Lighthouse.
Originally a single-storey granite barn predating the main house, this historic structure underwent a remarkable transformation thanks to the ingenuity of William Waters, a local man who served as a ship's radio operator during the Second World War. Mr. Waters, with his access to nearby shipyards, skilfully incorporated authentic maritime elements such as portholes, railings, and various ship parts, creating an enchanting atmosphere reminiscent of a seafaring vessel.
During his time in The Watchtower, Mr. Waters amassed an impressive collection of early radios, including some of the pioneering Marconi models. These radios, along with his extensive collection, are now housed in a museum in Suffolk, preserving his legacy and contribution to maritime history. Step back in time as you explore this unique space, where history and maritime nostalgia intertwine.
Ideal for up to two guests, step inside to discover the open plan living area with self-catering kitchenette facilities, including fridge-freezer, countertop double hob, kettle, combi microwave, conventional oven and grill and toaster. The ground floor bathroom includes an electric shower, basin, heated towel rail and WC.
Head up the staircase to the upper floor, with double bed and original low beams (watch your head!), where you can head out through the ‘hatch’ and onto the The Lookout to enjoy the far-reaching views across the Cornish coast. Guests can enjoy a morning coffee on the sofa inside or evening glass of wine on the wraparound balcony. The Lookout can also be accessed via an external spiral staircase, and leads back down to the garden, including an outdoor seating area, two large areas of gardens both enjoying spectacular sea views. Although the garden is enclosed, guests are responsible for ensuring dogs remain supervised at all times.
The white lighthouse of Pendeen Watch is an easy downhill mile away for walkers and from there it's just 10 minutes' walk down a track to the sandy inlet of Beach Cove, which is good for swimming. A further 15 minute walk along the coast path will take you to the hidden beach of Portheras Cove, which was recently voted ‘Best Secret Beach’ by The Times newspaper. Intrepid adventurers can reach Portheras in around 20 minutes via the more challenging track behind the house.
In more recent years, The Watchtower became the art studio of Cornish painter and printmaker Angela Annesley. As you wander through the tower, you'll have the opportunity to admire Angela's artworks on display. As a guest, you'll enjoy exclusive access to Angela's collection, with the chance to purchase any of the pieces at discounted prices. For a broader selection of her work, you can visit her website at www.angelaannesley.co.uk.
