Saint Gervais Mont Blanc is a charming alpine town, and as a spa resort, has attracted tourists since 1806. It became a ski resort as well with the opening of the first cable car to the Bettex as early as 1936! It has remained very French even into the Twenty First Century, with an impressive landscape wherever you look. The main 'Voie Royale' climbers route and the summit of the Mont Blanc (4810 metres) are all in the commune of St Gervais.
Set in a narrow river gorge halfway between Megève (15 mins drive) and Chamonix (20 mins drive), this small Savoyard market town offers an excellent selection of interesting food shops, cosy bars, nightclubs and restaurants. Every Thursday morning in Saint-Gervais there is a superb genuine market. In the month of October the annual Foire Agricole, or Agricultural Fair, takes place in Saint Gervais. It’s an amazing event that sees the whole town come together as well as those tourists who are ‘in the know’. St Gervais and the mountains surrounding her are the home to many farms which have been in the same families for generations. The Foire Agricole celebrates that fact and does so in style but also manages to embrace everything that is great about the Pays du Mont Blanc, the local artisans, the food, the wine, the country.
Among Saint Gervais’ attractions are thermal baths with spa treatments, a cinema, casino, and many outdoor activities available such as an Olympic skating rink or unforgettable walks and rambles with over 180km of marked paths and trails, including a Baroque footpath. Finally, an excursion up the mountain on the Mont-Blanc Tramway is not to be missed.
The Mont Blanc Tramway is one of the last rack & pinion trains in France although the locomotives are no longer steam powered. In summer, the Tramway takes you to the foot of the Bionnassay Glacier, the Nid d'Aigle, at an altitude of 2372 metres. From here experienced mountaineers can climb to the Tête Rousse and Goûter mountain huts, and the Mont Blanc.
Summer activities: mountaineering, climbing, hiking and family theme, bungee jumping, skating rink, swimming pool, lifts, hiking all-terrain scooter, ATV, culture and heritage, paragliding, water sports, golf, mini-golf and tennis ...
