About this property
Large Characterful Farmhouse set in the beautiful tranquil French countryside
Located in the rural tranquillity of the Lot-et-Garonne, this large rustic farmhouse is a peaceful retreat from hectic life. The house is nestled away in the countryside, with plenty of space for children or animals, or for those just wanting to get away.
There is a large barn with a picturesque covered terrace (perfect for a late night meal and drinks before some star-gazing in the clear unpolluted skies). There is also an enclosed patio in the south-facing garden, which is a veritable sun trap even first thing in the morning where you can enjoy a croissant from our fantastic and friendly local baker in Ste Maure.
The house itself has one ensuite bedroom, two double bedrooms, and one triple room. There is a further double bedroom also accessible via its own front door with a private sitting and dining area and a shower room/toilet. There is also a spacious modern family bathroom. Downstairs there is a large and very characterful open-plan kitchen, with traditional tiles, beams and a huge open fireplace. There is a downstairs sitting room which is very cool in the summer, with a wood burning stove for the colder months. The sitting room leads onto the third of the terraces. There is also a downstairs toilet, and a study with telephone and wi-fi.
This is a lovely place to base yourself as the centre for activities. It is in the perfect location as in just 2 hours you could be braving the waves - swimming or surfing - in the Atlantic coast, or tanning on the golden sands of Mimizan Plage. 2/3 hours in the opposite direction would see you hiking or skiing in the Pyrenees, and in a 3 hour drive you could be canoeing down the stunning river Dordogne, where you can also find its famous prehistoric cave paintings in the Vézère Valley. Staying closer to home, you can have a day of wine tasting at the local vineyards, or a sunny day spent enjoying water activities at one of the many lakes and pools. There are also the vibrant and busy morning markets to go to where you can get your fresh fruit and veg for the day! Or else, you can be completely relaxed and spend a day at the house... Set up an easel and do a painting, or find a sunny spot and relax with a book, with no sounds around you but the birdsong and gurgle of the river at the bottom of the hill.
There is also the hugely sociable side of life here, which seems bizarre in such a quaint and rural area... But every evening, hosted by different villages, Gascony comes to life through its night markets, where everyone comes together to enjoy local produce, affordable delicious wine, fun music and friendly company. These night markets represent Gascony as a place where people have a true sense of the Joie de Vie, which is one of the most beautiful aspects of life in rural France.
