Accommodation In Samarinda

The name may sound like that of a fairytale princess, but Samarinda is in fact a sprawling riverfront metropolis whose skyline is dominated by the Islamic Centre. The towering minarets give the city a distinctly Persian flavour, and the muezzin's call is truly magnetic. Flowing through the city, the mighty Mahakam River offers guided trips, fishing and the local delicacy sate buaya (mmm, crocodile meat). Samarinda hotels for every budget are your window to this fascinating region.

Things to Do in Samarinda

Start your city tour with a trio of interesting religious sites. Masjid Shiratal Mustaqim is a 400-year-old Dutch-designed mosque built in colonial style, with a rare wooden minaret. Masjid Raya Darussalam is a striking mosque with rocket-like minarets, while the Islamic Centre offers panoramic views of the city. Farther afield, the Kutai National Park, about 136 km away, offers numerous opportunities to befriend orangutans, proboscis monkeys, clouded leopards and crocodiles galore. The Mahakam River is the water highway to Indonesia's impenetrable jungle, where you can discover the rich culture of the native Dayaks.

Getting to & Around Samarinda

Your Samarinda holiday begins at Sungai Siring Airport, which is located in the centre of town. Private taxis are plentiful, but for a cheaper option, walk 100 metres down to Jl Gatot Subroto and catch a B taxi to Samarinda hotels located at the waterfront. Pack your walking boots—the city is small enough to explore on foot, but the city can get a little rowdy at night, so take a taxi after dark. If you’re staying at one of the luxury hotels in Samarinda, many offer shuttles to help you get around.

Excellent hotel, staff and location. Only negative, parking was free but on departure we were charged by the car park attendant who said it wasn’t included. We have requested a refund on this. This did slightly disappoint was was a fabulous stay otherwise.
