The property itself was fine, it had some character. If you dont mind noise you sleep then youll manage. What turned this into an unpleasant stay was the staffs attitude to tipping. Whilst paying for the first round the staff asked me to "check" the bill. Asking for a tip this way at the bar was new to me and actually suprised me so i just checked the items were correct. Also I thought I was staying for dinner so I didn't tip for the first round, this was met by a slight look of disgust. I went to the bar to get a drink i forgot and the staff were gossiping about tips (coincidence?) When I later realised we weren't staying for dinner I went to tip the staff and they were pretending like tips were an alien concept to them...

The bed was sooo comfortable and cozy. The room and common areas very homey and comfortable. Amenities in our room much appreciated and well thought out. We were easily able to find a meal, felt safe walking in the area. Staff very accommodating. We were able to overcome jet lag and settle in.

The hotel was ideally located with plenty of nearby (payable) parking. The bar/restaurant was well laid out and the couple of times I walked through seemed to be buzzing. The room was perfect, decorated tastefully and had everything you would need. Stayed for 2 nights in a Comfy Cabin room over a weekend. I had emailed beforehand, asking for a room with a bath and this was honoured. Room was nice and large-ish for a hotel of this size. The decorations were quaint and thought was definitely put into the wall pictures and decor. Bathroom was great, with large bath and separate shower. Breakfast was great, freshly cooked. Too much noise
Everything was wonderful EXCEPT the noise all night long from the bar across the street. My room #2 was at the front of the hotel. The noise finally stopped at 2am. There were earplugs in the night stand, so I guess this is a common problem for guests.

The staff was wonderful and helpful. We had an early morning flight and they were able to schedule us a taxi that arrived promptly. We loved the room. It was well appointed and we really enjoyed the towel warmer. After traveling all day, it was just the rest we needed.

Great pub hotel.
We booked 3 rooms for one night prior to a cruise. The hotel is comfortable, friendly staff. Nice toiletries. Lovely tea and coffee in the room. We had a pleasant evening meal. (There was a 10% discount as hotel guests) The rooms do face the street and a busy junction with several bars and restaurants nearby means there is noise and music outside. (Earplugs found in bedside table were a good bonus!) We would be happy to stay again. Thank you Bridget and Team.

Our stay was perfect
Everything was very clean and all of the staff were friendly. Young man carried luggage up the 4 flights of stairs. We ate in the restaurant 3 times and all of the food was delicious.

We loved the rich history of The White Star and how it has been decorated and preserved to reflect that history. Our room was comfortable with every amenity that one might want or need. The location was convenient for walking to the high street and many local attractions. The staff were always friendly and helpful. The only drawback for us was that our room was on the top floor and there were quite a few stairs to get there. Good exercise, but next time we will request a room on a lower floor. We highly recommend The White Star

Great rooms with historical ambience. The staff was excellent. Full breakfast menu and nicely supplied bar fridge in room. So happy we chose The White Star!
