Cottage on the Hill overlooking Acadia Mountains, nearby Bay and Acadia Park

The Cottage on a Hill is located in a spacious, newly-renovated Maine barn on a beautiful and historic farm. It is a five minute walk to nearby scenic Morgan Bay, very close to hiking trails, biking and swimming. Acadia National Park is about 45 minutes away.

The farm offers a seasonal performing arts center featuring classical, jazz, singer songwriter and blues series among others.

Few rental spaces offer all of this in a ten-minute radius.

Pets: Dogs and cats are welcome, but you must contact me in advance so we can discuss details. Upon approval, there is an additional cleaning fee of $50.00 for the one pet or $80 for two pets. The fee for the first pet is included in your VRBO total. If bringing more than one pet, the additional pet fee is payable in cash at checkout. Stays longer than 7 days will need to discuss possible additional pet cleaning fees with the host. Please note that many animals live near the property and frequently walk through it (such as deer, wild turkeys, neighbors' cats, etc.) A porcupine lives under one of the barns, so we recommend keeping dogs on a leash when outside to avoid injury.

Late arrivals after 9:00 PM are subject to a late fee of $25.00.

Additional guests: For more than 2 guests, there is an additional fee of $25 per guest per night.

Anniversary get away
Overall the stay was nice. The cabin was clean and had a functional kitchen. However, to check in, we had to call the host directly and have him meet us. We couldn’t get in contact with the host despite multiple attempts and wound up having to wait on site for him to reach out to us to get in. This also made would have made it difficult had we needed anything during our stay. There wasn’t any shampoo or conditioner as there should have been but we wound up purchasing those ourselves to avoid having to get in contact with the host. Also, if you are looking for a private getaway, this isn’t it. There are two other cottages with in 10 steps. There are others slightly farther away. We didn’t mind it as we were gone all day each day so it suited our needs. And bring warm clothes in the fall/winter. The heater doesn’t effectively heat up the whole space. Overall, it was a good place and worked for us and it was convenient to Acadia, bar harbor, and everything else we wanted to see.

Just the quiet needed
I came here stressed and this was the perfect place to unwind. Saw some very cool wildlife. Came for Acadia which is about an hour away (CANNOT beat the price for being relatively close).

I enjoyed staying at Alan's place. He met me at the property and showed me around the apartment, explaining everything I needed to know. I very much like that kind of in person treatment.

Beautiful rustic cottage with a view
The uniqueness of the property was very inviting. Everything about the stay was very comfortable and it's a very quiet location.I was able to go for a nature walk just .1 miles away and bike to a beach that was 2.4 miles away. It was a bit of a distance from Bar Harbor but a lovely scenic drive to get there and back. Alan was a wonderful host and we did a lovely campfire one of the evenings.

But if your are staying multiple days make sure to bring your own shampoo and body wash

Cozy, indeed!
Alan was a wonderful host, and this property is absolutely gorgeous. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return! With that in mind, here are a few things that might be helpful for a future renter to know. None of them are problems, just differences from the norm that could take some folks by surprise. - The room does not have standard height ceilings. I'm 6"3, and had to duck slightly to go under the central support beam and in/out of the bathroom and shower. Not a problem for me, but it might trigger claustrophobia or bruised foreheads in others! - The kitchen is well-stocked, but does not include a stove. The listing does not mention one, but my wife and I have become so used to VRBO rentals having them that the lack was surprising and caused a small hiccup in the first night's dinner plans. - The water in the apartment comes from a well, and has a very strong metallic smell from iron content. The kitchen tap water is filtered and wonderful to drink, but if you're not used well water then taking a shower might surprise you. I had to reassure my daughter that there was nothing wrong with the water. :) - There is no TV. Normally that would be a massive bonus in our books, but we were invested in the Olympics and sad to miss the competitions on our first night there. (I know, I know. What a first-world problem to have!) Again, we absolutely loved our stay here and would definitely recommend the property to someone wanting to get away from it all in Maine!

Quiet respite
The property was as rustic as promised, including the mice (!). Views of Acadia, when we could see through the mist, were lovely. Alan was responsive when we discovered a plumbing problem for which he worked out a solution. We would encourage him to update the listing to NOT include an oven. We chose this listing because it offered a full kitchen. Also, the overall rules list would benefit from updated Wifi information. And there were few back-up supplies. Although we were directed to use any toiletries, the bathroom cupboard was empty. That written, the bed and futon were amazingly comfortable, and our stay, overall, was pleasant.

Very nice, full kitchen (which I didn't really need!). Bathrooms are more than adequate with plenty of hot water. May be slightly more rustic if that's not your thing (or, just what you want if it is!)

Surry Barn Apartment
The apartment was not as it appeared in VRBO photos. The pics must have been taken by a professional photographer when you compare the actual place to the “apartment.” It was clean but extremely rustic - and perhaps this is ok with some. The smell is very musty perhaps because this is an actual renovated barn. There are three apartments in this barn which could also make it very noisy at times. Views are not as portrayed. However, the host, Alan, was very friendly and we enjoyed meeting him.

Enjoyably Rustic and Peaceful
A good base camp for visiting the Acadia National Park area without the maddening crowds.. we enjoyed the 45 minute drive each way to/from the Acadia NP area... light traffic on the 2-lane highways/roadways to Ellsworth made this a nice way to start and finish each day. But, be sure you stock up on snacks/food to cook because you won't find any nearby restaurants - and that's what makes it such a great location! It's definitely a more rustic interior than your typical hotel/motel but that's part of the charm. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware and utensils, etc. and the overall open layout is very "loft" like. We really enjoyed the location and the host is welcoming and informative - they've been in the area for decades and are a great resource.

Not what we expected
We did not end up staying here because of the quality of the room. The carpet was wet, it was smaller than expected, and the entryway was dirty and had cobwebs. Despite my filing out the form for 5 adults, the owner was surprised we had adults. He did promptly offer us a refund, but we ended up spending double on a last-minute hotel room because of the change.

Could be good
If you are going to stay here, I suggest one of the cabins which look great. As for the “apartment with a view” - your view most likely will be other guests grilling just a few feet from your bedroom window on what turns out to be a communal deck, or sitting at the fire ring in front of the apartment with the smoke wafting inside. On the very hot, muggy nights I was there I had to close my windows (and, for privacy, my blinds).

Lovely & Quiet Weekend Away in Maine
Such a beautiful setting and the unseasonably warm weather made our stay that much better! Rustic accommodations made the experience truly enchanting. And the tour of the music hall where legends have played over the past 50 years was amazing! Lots of history and tales to be told here and in the nearby towns. Stroll Blue Hill and Ellsworth Main Streets -- dining and the breweries are must do's!
