Grandhotel Stary Smokovec - quality always assured

I stayed at this hotel during my business trip for one night. At my arrival the check in was super quick by very professional staff. The room was very nice, clean and spacious, furniture very stylish and modern making you feel like in 5* hotel. Bathroom was nice and good to with basic supplies provided. Hotel’s a la carte restaurant provides a variety of delicious food and the staff is very professional, nice and welcoming. The entire interior of the hotel is very unique as the hotel has a very famous history. I fully recommend this hotel to anybody visiting Stary Smokovec in High Tatras in Slovakia.

Very friendly amd helpful staff, clean, grand, beautiful hotel with great services. Very nice pool suitable for small swimming and rest with wellness. Giod cake and coffee, great breakfast and dinner. It was pretty luxurious stay. I would come back.

Wonderful classic hotel

A classic hôtel with lots of history, we loved our room that was recently renovated and comfortable. Clean, quiet and nice to have a separate bedroom. The main dining room was nice and the breakfast and dinner buffets were delicious and excellent with a wide choice. We also liked the game room area with the two pool tables. Swimming area should be bigger for the size of the hotel and opening time is rather limited ( from 15:00 to 21:00). Outside parking can be difficult when the hotel is full. We would recommend this hotel to enjoy the old world ambience

The location was great, the room was big enough, the breakfast was OK. The bathroom smells of mold. The "Wellness center" was a play ground for children. Children without swimsuits were in the pool, no pool for children, the Jacuzzi became a central play yard for the children. No way to relax inside, we give up unfortunately.

Really Liked It!

One reason we liked this hotel is because of its interesting history and beautiful Art Nouveau design. We would like it even more if it were refurbished to its original splendor like the photos in the hall, but we still enjoyed it. The wifi worked well. The staff member that really stood out was Martine (think I have the name right). If she doesn't already, she should train all of the staff members. While I found all of the staff to be professional, I found Martine to be extra friendly and welcoming, which is what you want when you are staying at a hotel on a mountain, and you don't speak the local language. Grandhotel was easy to get to on the electric railway from the main Poprad station. There are a few restaurants, cafes, and shops nearby. The gentleman working at the spa was also welcoming. The breakfast was ok though I do recommend the hotel focus a bit more on quality rather than quantity. I would rather have a few really good fresh items than tons of mediocre choices. For example, fresh juice would be nice as opposed to juice from a machine, which I find hard to imagine anyone from 2019 drinks that. The shower is really bad. You can't even use it really without getting water all over. Anyway, those are just small things that could be modernized, but overall we really loved the hotel. There are many cute areas to sit and write while having a drink, and if we were better prepared we could have taken many hikes. I guess it just gives us a reason to return one day.

A grand hotel in a grand location

My maternal grandmother grew up in Bohemia, then a part of a country called Czechoslovakia. She migrated to the United States as a teenager, and never had the chance to visit the High Tatra Mountains, now a part of Slovakia. She told her grandson: “There are no more beautiful mountains than these anywhere in the world.” And she was right. The High Tatras are spectacular, and they rise just behind the lovely town of Stary Smokovek. And at the heart of that town stands its Grand Hotel. Stay there if you can, dear traveler. Enjoy the splendor of the building; dine in its grand halls; enjoy its wonderful spa; and look out whenever you can at the fabulous peaks behind the building. The staff is able and professional. We particularly appreciated Lenka, Marek, and Philip in the dining hall. Just two concerns for this reviewer: 1) The town is starting to be overbuilt, and rather gross new hotels are rising to crowd the elegant campus of the Grand Hotel. 2) The East lounge is now marred by a large television set that displays itself ceaselessly to no watchers at all— a jarring intervention of Holiday Inn-ism offending the spirit of the magnificent site.

Very enjoyable

The hotel lives up to the billing of Grand. Room was great, with the exceptionnot the bathroom, which was again nice but awkward for washing. You could not take a standing shower, because the glass curtain did not provide enough of a barrier. Neither could you take a comfortable bath, the tub was too small. Using the hand shower one had to wet one self, soap up and then rinse carefully lest you made a huge mess on the floor. The service by staff at front desk, in the restaurants and bars, at the health club was always very good. The only other pet peeve I would have is that the health club does not open until 3pm. When I asked why I was given a logical answer for Europeans. I was told that as this was a mountain resort, which indeed it is and the Tatra Mountains are very nice, people do outdoor activities in the morning and make use of the health club upon their return in the afternoon. Indeed people are up early and you see hikers going of at crack of dawn. However, there are travelers such as me, who would love to start a day with a swim, then go for a hike, albeit a short one and end the day with a sauna. The shortcomings I have listed were overall very minor. The overall stay was great and I would stay there again anytime.

Excellent in some respects, lacking in others

Beautiful building in a wonderful location, right by the start of the trails and the furnicular up into the mountains. The breakfast buffet was excellent. The spa was very good and great after a day's hiking, containing Finnish sauna, infrared sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, plunge pool, pool, relaxation area and more. Rooms were a good size with very good mattresses. The downsides were that the pillows were all lumpy and uncomfortable even when we asked for different ones, which is not what I would expect in a 4* hotel. Also the shower is an attachment over the bath and is very low so you cannot comfortably shower but need to bend your legs to get under the water which was annoying. But in all we would stay again and enjoyed our time here, just wish the hotel would invest in some decent pillows!
