Visit the lovely Buller Gorge where you can enjoy jet boating, rafting, and kayaking, or head underground for some caving and mine exploration. Take a stroll along the pretty coast and enjoy some scenic hiking and bird watching in the forests. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy watching the seal colony at nearby Cape Foulwind, and you may also spot whales and dolphins in the waters. Fishing, horse riding, and mountain biking are other activities available in the area. Nice beaches are within easy reach, and the mild climate makes them accessible for greater parts of the year.

To learn more about Westport’s mining heritage, stop by the Coaltown Museum where you can see what life in the mines was really like as well as machinery, tools, and other exhibits. It also shows how the town has developed over the years. There are some traditional coal towns in the area too that are well worth a visit. Another popular local attraction is the Oparara Basin Arches. Art lovers can get their fill at the workshops and galleries. There is a good selection of shopping spots as well as a great array of places to eat and drink.
