Dual Master Bedroom: Designer Accommodations for the Long-Sta

Evidenced by the photography, narratives and passion of companion properties listed on this site- and seared into the American imagination by the paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe- the Piedra Lumbre basin captivates; a thin place. From the edge of a mesa, Casita á Medida surveys it all: red cliffs forming Abiquiu Lake to the East, Ghost Ranch expanding to the North, Chama River Valley to the West and El Pedernal dominating the horizon to the South. Filling between are the ranges of Sangre de Cristo and the Jemez, Santa Fe National Forest and Kit Carson National Forest. And dark sky nights.

To experience this area takes time, a lifetime pursuit of many. Days of hiking, fishing, boating, rafting, discovering petroglyphs, searching for fossils/ historic remnants; trips to Santa Fe, Taos, Ojo Caliente, Navajo Lake, Heron Lake, Chama, Pagosa Springs, Silverton and Durango, CO. Casita á Medida is designed with the long stay in mind. Built in the spirit of Northern New Mexico with deep deference to the surrounding landscape, Casita á Medida is a compound style retreat with one building housing dual master suites and another the great room, forming a protected patio third living space. The vast windows frame the art listed above (follow the changing forms of El Pedernal while preparing dinner; overlook the serenity of Ghost Ranch as you relax in the soaking tub). Inside melts to out. Designed to be completely off-grid, the site also features sustainable design such as passive solar mass, solar heat-boost for the domestic hot water and radiant floor heat, as well as gray watering, rain catchment and Holzer spirited permaculture supporting landscaping designed to further the circle.

With dual master suites (featuring a King and Queen or Queen and two twins) and a separated great room/kitchen structure, Casita á Medida can be modified to meet the needs for your stay. Allow yourself the time to be able to appreciate the experience. Allow yourself permission that the enjoyment - and biggest achievement- was that the day was.

Property had the most amazing views of anywhere I've ever stayed. The pictures don't come close to doing it justice. The property is designed perfectly and fits in with the landscape flawlessly. The view of the stars at night were spectacular.

Maximum Seclusion
I choose Casita á Medidato for my annual think week. Ultra secluded and quite frankly so cold outside that there really wasn't much to do other than focus on my work. As a northerner I underestimated the cold of January in New Mexico, it was approximately 6 degrees Fahrenheit or colder every morning with steady 10 to 15 mph winds then reaching a high of about 30 degrees. The overnight temp indoors was between 59 to 63 degrees so long johns and slippers are an absolute must. During the day with full sunlight max indoor temp is 70, the home has radiant floor heat so instant heat gratification is a no go. I loved the layout of Casita á Medida, the home is separated into 2 living spaces, kitchen/living room and bathrooms/sleeping spaces. Killer views everyday, bring binoculars! I watched about 40+ Elk, several Golden Eagles, a few Bobcats, and even places way off in the distance. I cooked meals everyday in the kitchen which was fully stocked with just about everything. The water is very soft and alkaline, it almost has soapy oiliness to it that leaves spots on all the dishes. Do not be alarmed that things look dirty, just be sure to use the drinking water provided or bring your own. I left feeling grateful to have the opportunity to stay here, I'm sure I'll be back again one day soon. Maybe in the fall instead of January!

AH-MAZING!
Absolutely wonderful home! The view of Lake Abiquiu and the surrounding mesas are without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places we have seen… (and my husband and I have been to a lot of places). The home was inviting, very clean, with open spaces, a cozy fireplace and the view from the master bath… well you will have to see it to believe it! Absolutely perfect for the two of us. We love exploring , hiking and we did not even need to leave the house to do so! Ghost Ranch - Georgia O’Keeffe’s hideaway - is just 15 min from the house. There is so much to do in the area and we only scratched the surface. Justin and Roslyn were just as wonderful - warm, friendly and easily available if needed. Looking at my calendar now to book again for next year!!

Peace and relaxation
Wow! This is the most peaceful rental with the most incredible view! My wife and I had a wonderful time. Just sitting outside relaxes and rejuvenates. The stars are amazing! The house worked out very well and was comfortable. Wifi is iffy, but if you have a hotspot, you are good to go. The drive is about 3.5 miles of rough road but any vehicle can do it in good weather. Also, check under your hood. Pack rats like to build nests there!

The view was outstanding,
The view was beautiful spent our morning and eveings waiting for the sunrise & sunset. Some negatives, the water in the house is not suitable for drinking fortunately we had our own. Master bedroom screen door was torn could not have it open due to mice in ever room. Kitchen glasses are old and look dirty.

Immerse in Nature and Solitude
After reading the reviews I had high expectations and wow, just blown away. Absolutely stunning piece of property. lots of good hiking around the house. We drove 45 minutes to hike the chimney trail at ghost ranch, great hike! We drove 45 minutes to Gallina for a green chile cheeseburger at Pappa Joes Kountry Kitchen, well worth the trip and the drive has stunning views and goes into the pine forests which are beautiful. Highly recommend and we will return!

Incredible, stunning views all around!
If you want to surround yourself in peaceful, gorgeous scenery this property has it in spades. It is in a remote location with teeth jarring & access roads (high clearance vehicles would be best, but we managed in a Ford Focus). Though remote, it makes a great jumping off point to many interesting nearby destinations. We enjoyed visiting Santa Fe (1 hr. drive), Los Alamos & the Bradbury Science Museum (closed Mon.) (1 hr. drive); Bandelier NHP - great hiking; & wonderful archeological site - (1 hr drive); Chama, NM (Tierra Wools, Combres & Toltec Railway) - 1 1/2 hr drive; Valles Caldera National Preserve (1 1/2 hr drive); Ghost Ranch (1/2 drive) and many others! The casita provides a comfortable, welcoming retreat. The night sky is spectacular and truly amazing! We loved staying and relaxing here and will return in the future.

A genuinely luxurious Abiquiu, New Mexico experience
The home possesses exquisite architectural and interior design, situated perfectly on a bluff surrounded by stunning mountains, the lake and rolling plains. The living/kitchen space has vast expanses of glass taking perfect advantage of those views. Radiant floor heating kept us comfortable in the snow and frigid temps. Foremost were the thoughtful provisions for comfort. We enjoyed viewing tv on the comfy leather wrap-around sofa in the great room, and the easily navigated, well- appointed kitchen. We quickly adapted to the unique "compound style" arrangement with the bedroom unit separated from living/kitchen unit. It's a short sprint across the covered breezeway, even in pajamas! Additionally, walking the neighborhood was pleasant, scenic and completed the perfect kind of get-away we were hoping for.

Magical
My husband and I drove 20 hours to stay at the Casita. It was worth every minute of the drive there and back. We cannot say enough how wonderful this place truly is to us. We used our week to relax and recharge. No need to even leave the Casita - as views surrounding the property are plenty enough. The joy we felt while at this property can't be beat and we cannot wait to come back next year. The host gave impeccable directions and the app Waze gets you directly to this remote property, so don't worry. The house is very well stocked with almost anything you can think of, but a trip to Bodes will get you by if you forget something. Any inconveniences listed in other reviews are nothing but minor and didn't bother us at all. Book the trip. Leave your worries at home. Rest. And enjoy.

extraordinary location--the best ever
comfortable home, very well stocked (with kitchen equipment) and paper goods, towels, etc. A few things needed repair--a window that didn't close, circuit breakers that went off for no reason, a finicky door lock and we couldn't figure out the TV. those are minor--my major suggestion is for there to be at least one emergency phone number in case you need it. There was none to be found. We were there for 6 nights and really appreciated the beauty and the stupendous views from the setting. I just wish Justin had left a number. Also, you might want to consider ADA compliant toilet seats. Despite the quibbles, we will recommend the place to others.

Breathtaking
This home is a wonderful respite from the busyness of the world. The views are breathtaking from sunrise to sunset, as well as amazing star gazing. Having the two separate buildings was great for being with the group or taking time for yourself. When they say they have everything there…they really mean it! Some of the things I was unsure of (laundry soap, beach towels) were provided! We visited the water three different ways; 1.) walked the steep path down to the dock for a quick jump in the river, 2.) drove to the private “beach”/boat ramp and set-up shop for a day of relaxing and getting in the water when hot, 3.) set up “camp” at the reservoir beach to the right of the boat ramp for a day of sitting in the sun and SUPing. As mentioned in the description wifi is limited. It was wonderful to disconnect and if you want to watch anything I highly recommend downloading before you come. We did not have luck streaming. But we did bring a projector and the wall between the two houses is a perfect place to project a movie under the stars…truly magical. I highly recommend bringing everything you want in the first time (or stopping at Bodes on the way in) because once you are here you don’t want to leave!

Peaceful getaway
Really enjoyed this getaway. If you are looking to unwind away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some breathtaking views and sunsets, this is a great choice. Well stocked kitchen, comfy beds and sofa. As is common with a remote location, we had some rodent visitors break into our food scraps the first night. Bring along some sealable containers and plenty of drinking water. A quick trip to Bodes will do with most anything you leave behind. Thanks for the memories from this one!

Not what it's cracked up to be
I rented this property because of the view. It is spectacular. However, there are some things to be aware of: 1. Directions are poor. It's not about 8 miles from the dam, it's 5.5. Once on the gravel (and the rocks), a sign points you in the wrong direction. 2. Communication from host was poor. I initiated contact, got no reply. When I attempted to communicate that I couldn't find the key, answer was received the next morning. 3. Photograph of kitchen window is actually a photoshopped version of a small print on the premises. Real view from kitchen window is the garage. Some mountains, but also the garage. 4. The property is open range. Cows are present every day. Cows are at times 3 feet in front of windows. Evidence of cows is plentiful. 4.There is electric fencing on the property to keep cows off the minimal plantings. This was brought to my attention by my 2 dogs. No mention of this to me. 5. The majority of the light switches are upside down. 6. I think the large windows have leaked. There is some kind of repair going on.

Fantastic house in breathtaking location
Really beautiful, well- and thoughtfully-designed house in a breathtaking location. Words and pictures don't do justice to the views or how great it is to sit in the main house and gaze at them through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Radiant floor heating kept us warm during a snowstorm, beds were really comfortable, and couch was great to cozy up on. Tub in master bath is really special, and the patio is fantastic. Easy water access to both the Chama River and the Abiquiu Lake. The location is about 30 minutes from the nearest grocery store (Bode's, which has most everything and great food from their restaurant case too), so pick up anything you want to cook on your way, but it is worth it to be in a wonderfully, beautifully isolated location. The house is really well-stocked with anything you might want or need (spices, firewood, cooking utensils and supplies, dry goods, beach towels, magazines, etc.). A couple of technical notes: we had good cell service with T-Mobile and Verizon, but would still recommend downloading movies if you want them ahead of time, as the jetpack didn't have quite enough speed to stream without a lot of interruptions, and don't count on Zoom unless you can hotspot, but good selection of DVDs, and internet on our phones was plenty fast for email, etc. Owners were great to communicate with--super helpful and friendly, and you can tell that the place is loved and well-kept.
