Activity itinerary

Tortoli
  • 1h
Round trip from Tortoli via scenic dirt roads on the Golgo plateau
Tomba dei giganti di Osono
  • 15m
The Tomb of the Giants of Osono, more than twenty metres long, is located in a valley in Triei and is part of Ogliastra's Nuragic heritage. This very ancient burial, located in a natural amphitheatre with the mountains of Baunei in the background, has a peculiar structure, with a tumulus and a semicircular exedra. The architraved entrance leads to a burial chamber of about ten metres, built with blocks of granite, schist and limestone, covered by seven large slabs. The exedra, built around the 10th century B.C., is surrounded by twelve granite monoliths. The tomb has remained hidden until today, protected by soil and vegetation. From its location, there is a panoramic view of the hills and valley of Ardali to the coast of Arbatax.
Passo Genna Ramene
  • 15m
The Genna Ramene Pass, located in Sardinia, is a mountain pass that connects the Gennargentu valleys with the Nuoro region. At an altitude of around 1,300 metres, it offers spectacular views of the Gulf of Orosei over the mountain range and surrounding landscapes. The area is characterised by rocky and mountainous terrain, covered with forests and Mediterranean scrub.
Chiesa di San Pietro al Golgo
  • 15m
The country church of San Pietro, with its characteristic white façade standing out amidst the Golgo mountains, is one of the most famous sights on the plateau. Located about 8 km from Baunei, it attracts thousands of visitors every year. According to tradition, the church was built between the 17th and 18th centuries thanks to the offerings of local shepherds. Celebrations in honour of St Peter date back to at least 1606.
Su Sterru
  • 15m
Su Sterru is Europe's deepest chasm, at 270 metres high, located on the Golgo plateau in Baunei. Ancient legends described it as the lair of a snake. Initially thought to be a volcano, it was only discovered in 1957 that it is a karstic abyss formed by erosion. The entrance, of basaltic rocks, opens 25 metres in diameter, widening to 40 at the bottom. It is reached on foot through a landscape rich in history and natural beauty, such as ancient wells, tombs of giants and nuraghi.
Santa Maria Navarrese
  • 1h
According to legend, a princess from Navarre, who fled Spain around 1052, found refuge in the bay of Santa Maria Navarrese after a terrible storm. As a sign of gratitude, she had a small white church built, which can still be seen today near the beach. Today, Santa Maria Navarrese is a tourist destination on the east coast, loved for its tranquillity and colours: the green of the centuries-old olive trees, the white of the small church and the blue of the sea of the Gulf of Arbatax.
Baunei
  • 30m
The basaltic basins of Golgo, near the church and the chasm, where rainwater remains all year round, are called ‘As piscinas’ (‘the pools’) by the Baunians. Scholars believe that these natural basins were modified by the Nuragics for use in metalworking. Moreover, the continuous presence of water may have attracted magic-animistic cults in the past.
