Abandoned Village of Kayakoy

Kayakoy is a ghost village with a rich history. Once known as Levissi, it was a thriving Greek settlement until the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923. The village was subsequently abandoned, leaving behind over 500 stone houses, two historic churches, and several chapels scattered across the hillside. The silent, weathered structures tell stories of a vibrant community that once flourished here. Today, Kayakoy stands as an open-air museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the past amidst breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and distant sea. The valley is named for the hundreds of butterfly species that inhabit the area, particularly the colourful Jersey Tiger butterfly.
