What you can expect

Explore the massive Itaipu Dam, an impressive joint venture by the governments of Brazil and Paraguay and one of the most powerful hydroelectric plants in the world. See the engineering masterpiece on the border between the two countries for a sense of the efforts that made it happen.

Operating since 1984, the dam turns the powerful water flows into energy that supplies most of Paraguay's electricity, and no small amount of the power that runs Brazil. Designed and constructed by engineers from both sides of the border, the plant offers some unique views of the Paraná River and a landscape transformed by its presence.

The dam includes an eco-museum dedicated to the clean, green energy produced here, the Bela Vista reforestation programme financed by the company, and the construction and maintenance of the plant itself. For an extra charge, you can choose a panoramic tour around the premises or a technical tour that also introduces you to the heavy machinery behind the plant.

On this tour you will do the Panoramic Tour. As the ticket is not included, you will pay for it on the spot.:

  • The Panoramic tour: Watch a documentary film on the power plant. See the dam and spillway from the central observation deck (without entering the facility).
The grandeur of a plant built between two countries, when revealed in numbers, is surprising: the Itaipu dam is 7,919 metres long and 196 metres high. But when viewed from close up and from various angles in a tour around the Itaipu Panoramic, it impresses even more and guarantees a unique and striking experience. In addition to the privileged view of the spillway at the top of the dam, the path still allows contact with nature and beautiful landscapes within the Itaipu Tourist Complex.

  • The Technical tour cannot be done in this tour.

The technical tour was great. By going inside of the dam makes you rely appreciate the size. The tour operator - GRAY LINE was tenable. Fist they kept changing the pick up time and ultimately showed up 55 minutes late. Then after telling me that I had to pay cash - NO CREDIT CARDS - at the dam for the tour. The dam DOSE take credit cards and Gray Line insisted that i pay them in cash and let them but the ticket. Their reason was - so that they could get "more credits". I did not mind paying for the tour as I knew that in advance. However I did mind inuring about US$30 extra to get cash from the ATM. After the tour I had to wait about 45 minutes for the transfer back into town. Great tour - poor operator

If you are interested in technology, I highly recommend the "Special Tour" so you will get to see not only the panoramic views but also the dam close up and the inside of the power station.
