Overview

Enjoy a licensed guided tour of the Rock Churches Park: it's an easy walk on the Murgia plateau, within the 'Natural Historical Archaeological Park of the Rock Churches', and is led by an experienced licensed local guide. It will be possible to explore the naturalistic and geological aspects of the park, by walking on the edge of the deep 'ravine. Over 150 rock-carved places of worship, called rupestrian churches, give the Murgia plateau a spiritual atmosphere since the early Middle Ages. The deep canyon's stunning landscape acquires a new meaning as a place of the soul, besides being a scene of visible traces of agro-pastoral activities, dating back to the Neolithic period. Visit rock churches such as “Madonna delle Tre Porte”. You have the chance to listen to an exiciting and cultural storytelling of the ancient time and hidden city and to observe the Sassi area walking on film locations. This tour is for small groups of up to 15 persons and the duration is approximately 2 hours.

Jazzo Gattini - Centro Visite

Murgia Timone, a panoramic area facing the Sassi di Matera, very representative of the entire protected area. In the area, which includes a spectacular stretch of the Gravina di Matera canyon, are a series of rock settlements. This is a guided walk of just over 2 hours following a fascinating, scenic route. It winds along the slope of the Gravina opposite the Sassi, taking in a number of caves and rock churches.

Despite the church's rather rustic entrance, the interior is well decorated with frescoes and multiple crosses scratched into the walls. However, gaps in the masonry are the result of German archaeologist Rudolf Kubesh removing more valuable frescoes from the church in the 1960s.

Rock churches excavated in the 9th and 10th centuries generally conformed to a Byzantine model, having a rectangular or square chamber with plain walls and behind this two arched presbyteries supported by a central pillar. The rupestrian church of San Falcione is also known as San Canio (Saint Canius) or San Canione. Saint Canius, bishop and martyr, is the patron saint of Acerenza and its archdiocese, which is historically linked to Matera’s.

Parco Regionale Archeologico Storico Naturale delle Chiese Rupestri del Materano, also called Parco della Murgia Materana, is characterised by a soft rock consisting of deep fissures creating cliffs, ravines, caves, and gorges which have been used by man since prehistory.
