Accommodation In Albury
Sister cities are bound to have some harmless sibling rivalry. Just ask Albury, which sits across the Murray River from its twin, Wodonga. Two cities of equal beauty and riverside property, one in NSW and the other in Victoria.
It’s a tale as old as time…or at least as old as 1852, when Wodonga set up shop across the river from Albury. We may never know which city is the Jan and which is the Marcia in this relationship, but we do know a visit to the Albury region is never a bad idea.
Many a weary traveller has stopped in Albury on the way from Sydney to Melbourne. But this city is more than a mere rest stop. So plunk your bags down at an Albury hotel and have a look around, will you? Start sipping a glass of something over ice and read Wotif’s Albury travel guide for tips on how to make the most of your holiday.
Planning Your Holiday
If you’re flying to Albury, you’ll land at Albury Airport (ABX), which is only 10 minutes from the city centre. That’s right, savvy traveller, hotels near Albury Airport are never far from the action.
But there is more to planning your trip than seeking places to stay in Albury. Once you’re settled into your temporary home away from home, we recommend you invest in a bike rental. The Albury-Wodonga area has about 80km of cycle trails, and plenty of countryside for you to “ooh and ahh” at along the way.
That being said, if you decide to travel primarily by canoe, we wouldn’t look at you funny. Swear.
Eating Your Way Through Albury
The hotels in Albury make it easy to sleep in late, it’s true. But the aromas floating through the air in the morning are incredible, so if you slumber with an open window you’re bound to sit up straight with a grumbling stomach.
As soon as your feet hit the ground, you’re on a mission to Coffee Mamma for some award-winning espresso. That jittering you feel in your veins is totally normal. Then you’re off to Mr. Benedict for a breakfast with the same name.
After a day of play, dinner at a restaurant with a deck near the river is well-deserved. Eat up!
Travelling with Family
In Albury with your favourite merry band of adventurers? To the Albury Botanic Gardens you go! The entire family will enjoy skipping through four hectares of carefully manicured gardens and lawns. Let the wee sprites among you investigate the children’s fairy temple and troll cave.
Need something a little quieter? Spend a wonderfully simple afternoon during your Albury holiday at Noreuil Park, feeding the ducks and floating on your back in the river.
Indulging Your Inner Adventurer
Getting around on foot is for the birds. Wait, that doesn’t make sense. But you get what we’re saying: Sometimes unconventional modes of transportation are more fun. Climb into a kayak and spend a few hours traversing from the Mungabareena Reserve to Noreuil Park.
Not fast enough, speed demon? Depart your Albury accommodation in the morning and don’t go back until you have jet skied across every inch of Lake Hume.
Exploring the Nightlife
You’re still down under, but you might swear you were a few kilometres from Kensington Palace. Right in the heart of Albury CBD, British pubs like The Bended Elbow transport you to the heart of the UK. Shimmy up to the bar and order a European Ale. Tell ’em we sent you.
If you’d rather dance until your heels hurt, pay a visit to the Commercial Club, where live music reigns and you can barhop without even leaving the venue. Your accommodation in Albury has room service, right? You’ll have no problem healing what aches you in the morning with a plate of bacon and eggs.
Having Fun All Year
The Albury community sure knows how to come together for a good time. There is always something on, no matter the season. In the summer months, the city hosts Cinema Under the Stars, showing movies after dark in several locations around Albury.
Between March and October, the QEII Twilight Market sets up boutique vendors once a month. Be honest: Who doesn’t need more essential oils and hand-dipped candles?
During spring and autumn, it’s worth leaving the comfort of Albury hotels to check out free concerts in the botanic gardens. Grab a blanket and soak up some sun.
Wotif has serious Albury hotel deals, including special rates on hotels near Monument Hill. With visions of the Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) and scenic river valleys dancing through your head, book your accommodation today. Before you know it, you’ll be floating down the Murray River and leaving those email notifications behind. Stan from accounting can wait a few days for your reply!
