Holidays To Ecuador
Flanked by the Pacific Ocean in the West and Colombia and Peru to the north and south respectively, Ecuador is a hidden jewel on a continent of treasures.
From the neo-Gothic architecture of its many cathedrals to its fresh ceviche and friendly people, it’s no wonder why this place is coming into its own as a holiday hot spot. Check out Wotif’s great selection of Ecuador packages and discover something new.
Things to Do in Ecuador
If you plan on spending some time roaming the capital city of Quito, get some wheels from Wotif’s great Quito car hire options and make your way to the historic centre of the city. This is one of the most important and well-preserved old towns in all of Latin America, and it has plenty of sites to keep you busy. Check out the Basilica del Voto Nacional, the largest neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas. One of the coolest aspects of the building is the statues of native animals like iguanas, armadillos and Galapagos tortoises that dot its walls.
Don’t just limit yourself to one city during your holiday in Ecuador. Four hundred kilometres south of the capital is Guayaquil, a great place to roam. Take a walk through Parque Seminario and feed mango slices to the many iguanas that call this place home. Don’t worry, they’re friendly!
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
When you’re in the capital and want to do some spending, check out the Mercado Artesanal La Mariscal for some souvenir shopping. Pick up an alpaca blanket for cold evenings and get your hands on a pan flute for late-night serenading. But the real rock star of a market lies two hours north in the city of Otavalo. Shoppers, here’s a pro tip for you: Many hotels in our package deals to Ecuador are located near this huge market.
If you find yourself hungry in the port of Guayaquill, Ecuador’s largest city, don’t panic! There’s plenty of tasty treats to ease your hunger. Go to the Malecon 2000 on the banks of the Guayas River, where a number of restaurants stand along a restored boardwalk. They serve up delicious Ecuadorian dishes like locro de papa, empanadas and ceviche. If all you ate was the ceviche, that’d be enough.
Many of the big cities in this country have well-established nightlife areas like New Town in Quito and Las Penas in Guayaquill. If you want to escape the city for a while during your Ecuador holiday, head to the coastal town of Montanita and party on the Pacific. This place has been a haven for hippie expats since the late 1960s, and has grown into a town filled with hostels, cantinas and discotheques.
