Izmir Holiday Packages
A beautiful port city whose edges are gently lapped by the azure Aegean Sea, Izmir is both an escape and an education.
It's hardly off the beaten path, but still surprisingly under the tourist radar considering its seafront location and cultural heritage. The city is a little bit Greek, a little bit Roman and arguably the most liberal destination in Turkey. A holiday in Izmir will feel a bit indulgent, as there's plenty to eat, drink and buy in this beautiful Turkish outpost.
Things to do in Izmir
Once upon a time, Izmir was little more than a stopover for visitors to Ephesus, the Roman city that's home to the Temple of Artemis. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, there's just one column left of Artemis, but Ephesus also features a library façade, theatre and stone street. Only 80 kilometres from the city, Ephesus is easily accessible with one of Wotif’s Izmir car hire options. It is the most extraordinary of ghost towns, but you might want to avoid the gladiators' graveyard if you're wary of encountering real ghosts during your Izmir holiday.
Back in Izmir, spend as much time as you can at the Kordon, the waterfront promenade. Here is where you can really relax and enjoy the city’s vibe. You can just lie on the grass and enjoy the atmosphere or get food and libations. Afterward, jet down to nearby Ataturk Museum, or make your way on foot to enjoy the sound of the Aegean Sea crashing on the shore. There's a magic sunset in the evening hours, so make a point to enjoy the sites as the sun goes down.
A short walk from the Kordon is the Saat Kulesi, a clock tower in the middle of a busy square. Built at the turn of the 20th century, it's an excellent example of Ottoman architecture, adding more culture to your Izmir holiday. With only three steps up to the base, it's also an easy climb for a historic monument.
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
For a modern mall where you can buy gifts and take in a movie, visit the Konak Pier Shopping Centre. If you're looking for an authentic Turkish market, check out the food and linens at Bostanli Pazarl or the spices, coffee and clothing at Kemeralti Market. Come for the bargains, stay for the colourful crowds.
While you can pick up snacks of nuts, fruit and fish at the markets, you can also "spice up" your Izmir holiday package with a sit-down meal at a local restaurant. Don't leave town without sampling boyoz, a savoury pastry special to Izmir. Kumru, another local favourite, is a simple sandwich of cheese, tomato and sausage. You can get succulent seafood along the Kordon or in the Alsancak neighbourhood.
Alsancak is also where you'll get a taste of Izmir nightlife. You'll have your pick of traditional Turkish music or modern electronica. The entertainment district spills out to the waterfront neighbourhood, where you can enjoy the shimmering moon over the surf while munching on a boyoz.
