Drop your bags at your accommodation in Montpellier and head to the Ecusson, the city's historic medieval centre. Wander the maze of streets to glimpse historic hotels, admire European art in the Musee Fabre or explore native Mediterranean flora at the Jardin des Plantes, a botanical garden dating from 1593. Check out La Place de la Comedie (nope, not a comedy club; it’s the city’s main square) and then head north to walk around the tree-lined Esplanade or eat at one of the outdoor restaurants. For a picnic of your own, stop at one of the markets to pick up some fresh groceries, then "baguette" all up and enjoy a scenic lunch on one of the lovely beaches. North of the city, climb the Pic Saint-Loup for a view of the countryside, but don't wear yourself out too much; there are lots of wineries and olive groves to explore along the mountainside when you're done hiking.
