Sukhothai Holiday Packages

In Sanskrit, the name Sukhothai means "Dawn of Happiness." Divided into older and newer districts and located about 420 km north of Bangkok, this city is home to both a hopping contemporary nightlife and the extraordinary ruins of the 13th-century Thai capital. Explore the ancient ruins and modern attractions when you book one of our Sukhothai holiday packages.

Things to do in Sukhothai

Like the city, Sukhothai holidays mix a little old and new. Step back in time with a visit to the Sukhothai Historical Park, which encompasses the preserved remnants of the ancient kingdom. This is one of Thailand's most expansive historical sites, home to sprawling ruins both within and outside the city walls. Sukhothai Historical Park is located around 12 km from the city centre—a long way to walk. To save your feet, Wotif can set you up with a great Sukhothai car hire deal.

Sukhothai was once renowned for its Sangkhalok ceramics—a type of glazed pottery in various colours and patterns. The remains of 200 kilns lie along the Yom River to the north of the city. If you love to scavenge, shards of original pottery can still be found along the banks. Don’t just carry around broken bits, though. Instead, learn all about the creation of these ceramics at the Sangkhalok Museum.

To get a different perspective of life in rural central Thailand, hop into in a traditional long-tail boat and cruise along the Yom River. Hold on tight to your camera and snap some gorgeous pics.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

Shopaholics will love the modern riff on the traditional Sangkhalok ceramics. Updated designs feature the green/blue glaze paired with more complex, contemporary patterns. Take these beautiful and functional souvenirs home for daily reminders of your Sukhothai holiday. You'll also find many shops and market stalls selling jewellery woven from the finest strands of gold and silver thread. Often, the designs echo the detailing found on the ruins of Sukhothai.

The best food in Sukhothai is outside. Hit the town's many street food stands and markets to devour fresh (and cheap) local delicacies. Try the signature dish, Kuaytiaw Sukhothai—noodles in pork broth with beans and ground peanuts. It’s the perfect thing to slurp down while you’re roaming around the Sukhothai Night Market.

After you’ve loosened your belt a few notches, make your way back to Sukhothai Historical Park to see the Sukhothai Night Light and Sound Show. The light dances on the ruins as the locals release lanterns, crafting an experience that is at once beautiful and surreal. Sleepy? Head back to your hotel, stopping for a nightcap or two at one for the many bars along the street connecting the old and new cities.
