Overall, I recommend this hotel. Like many others, I picked this hotel based on reviews so I want to provide one. It’s located in a safe and relatively quiet area of Amsterdam very close to the Heineken brewery and Rijktmuseum. It’s about a 35-40 minute walk from the train station so we took an Uber since it was raining when we arrived. I liked the location because Amsterdam is a small city and we could easily walk or tram to places. The staff is very friendly and helped us with our luggage (see why below) and allowed us to leave our bags after checkout as we went out for brunch and to the Rijkt. I gave this hotel 4/5 stars in a few areas. First, while my kids and I found this charming you should know the stairs to the levels with rooms are very steep and there’s no elevator. We had a small suitcase which they brought up for us but if you’re traveling with large and heavy suitcases this could be a problem. Also, our room was small They tend to be smaller in Europe and that’s fine but we were 3 so if we had large suitcases it would have been tight. Finally the room was clean and had fresh linens and towels but I gave a 4/5 for cleanliness given its age and overall condition So I do recommend this hotel but you should know about the stairs and room size.

Fun areas around it, close to the metro, clean, cool views from out the window. A fan in the room would have been helpful and some barrier around the shower so the entire bathroom didn't get completely soaked with each use. People complained about the steep stairs, but we saw them as a fun challenge.

we ended up being changed from a double bed room to a two single bed room, which was fine. The room was small with just a two beds and that was literally it. The worst thing about it, was I’m now covered in bed bug bites all over which is why I’ve given such a poor rating. Will not be using this hotel again and will be informing the hotel of the cleanliness of the rooms

The location of Sphinx is very good. And the breakfast was acceptable and satisfying. However many amenities of an ordinary guest room and toilet are missing such as towel bars, a place to hang a jacket, a small lamp for night reading...... The hotel is under renovation and construction materials are actually blocking an exit. Yet the hotel was getting a market rate.

The hotel is in a brilliant location! We got around Amsterdam very easily from our location. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was very small and basic, but was comfortable and clean.

The room was quite misleading to what was in the pictures. On appearance it looked unclean, particularly the walls. The TV didn't work either. Myself and my boyfriend also went home with insect bites on us and rashes! People were smoking in their rooms so we also woke up to sore throats! Significantly over priced for what you got however location is faultless if you don't mind 'roughing it'

The hotel was disgraceful, the rooms did not match the pictures on the website, the room smelled of damp, there were open sockets which could have caused harm, the laminate flooring was broke and the main floor was exposed which could cause unjury, the room was dirty all around the window ledges, overall it was terrible and we could not stay in the hotel, we booked the Armada hotel which was for superior, if there is anyway you can arrange a refund that would be great.
