The rooms are nice. However the bar area was being refurbished and so there was nowhere for us to go with our dog except the outside bar that had been put up as an alternative. This was untidy and not up to the standard of the rest of the hotel. The menu was limited with small portions and not value for money. Had we been told about the bar refurbishment when we booked we would have looked elsewhere. Also £26 per night for parking and £25 per night for the dog was rather excessive! We have stayed at this hotel before but the current owners are not doing it justice.

The Gonville ended up being the best hotel we visited on our trip through parts of UK. Beautiful hotel, a/c was wonderful, and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Definitely would recommend and will stay again

Great staff and lovely hotel
The staff here are super helpful and friendly. When we checked in the lady walked us to the room and showed us around. The room was nicely decorated and the bathroom was huge. Breakfast was fantastic - basically a full restaurant service alongside your typical buffer. The garden bar area is really nice and the quiet garden around the back is peaceful. Good location too - opposite a huge open park, and about 15 minutes walk to the Market Hill in the centre of the town.

The hotel was in a beautiful location opposite the par and was very conveniently placed close to all the sites of our interest. The hotel however had a serious problem with hot water supply in the shower and despite the maintenance crew visit this was not resolved within the period of our stay.

We Love this hotel great service great staff well trained. The only reason for the less than excellent is, the rooms were so dark and I mean not enough lighting. It was impossible to read. It may have to do with the energy conservation, and I admire that. But not being able to read in the room is a negative.

Poor Menu
The Gonville main restaurant has got a new Menu and I unfortunately don’t believe it is good enough for such an amazing place We were left underwhelmed and still hungry after 3 course from the menu Chewy steaks with no options for sides Literally no option for any accompanying carbs unless you were a child and chips were then an option. We have stayed at the Gonville 4 years running now and it has become a tradition to eat at least once at the restaurant every stay it was a big part of our stay. But we will be checking on the menu before booking our next stay On another note a private function was being held in the courtyard tent. Whilst leaving our room we took shelter from a torrential down pour under one of the garden parasols. Where we were swiftly moved on by guests at the private party that we should not be in this area.. This caused distress and embarrassment to us when we have paid for a premium room and yet have been made to feel unwelcome by people who not even staying in the Hotel. Our understanding was that the courtyard was for all to use but obviously the tent is out of bounds. This was backed up by reception staff But we had to face an angry hoard of party goers to explain this just so we could buy a drink from the courtyard bar. I don’t expect to fight for my right to buy a drink whilst staying as a guest at your hotel

Poor service, nice location, extremely overpriced
We were not impressed by the check in experience, there was nobody at reception and after we waited a while, we had to try to locate them through the hotel. Then when they finally arrived, no apology and an overly casual attitude. Throughout our stay we tried to contact reception but nobody was ever available. There was an answerphone, we left messages but nobody ever got in touch and our requests were just ingnored.
