The main reception rooms are in a good state but the bedrooms are very old and tired looking. Unbelievable hot in the room and unable to open the window as it had been painted over. Poor looking furniture with handle missing from dressing table. Bathroom dated and bath needs re enamelling.

This hotel used to be a quirky old-fashioned place having a nice "faded grandeur" appeal. Now it is a just a filthy wreck, run by incompetent staff. On our recent stay there was a mix up in reservations due to Expedia failing to send a booking confirmation to me. That is the fault of Expedia (not the hotel) and they refused to refund me (costing me about £270 for which I got nothing). I am now pursuing this legally. But bear in mind - if you book through Expedia you may not get a refund if THEY make an error. My advice is not to use Expedia at all. On arrival there was a queue stretching right around the hotel lobby to the front door with about 40 people waiting to check in. Having received keys we had to queue again for the one tiny lift that was still working. We were greeted with a very worn out shoddy room (not the so called "executive suite" as described). The room was above a dance floor below and the noise was terrible. There was dirty laundry on the wardrobe (from a previous occupant). We asked to be moved. The second room was even worse. Absolutely filthy with vomit (or diarrhoea) splattered on the toilet, worn out fixtures and fittings, thin lumpy bed a window that would not close. I thought I could smell burning. This turned out to be the plug on a room heater on the wall. The plug was hotter than the heater. Dangerous. We cancelled our second night and went home (4 hour drive) rather than stay here. Our weekend was ruined, no full refund - £400 wasted. AVOID!

Avoid the Adelphi at all costs
Hotel is old and shows it, hasn't had any real investment for years. Decor tired, peeling paint and paper, executive room we paid extra for was small, cold and cramped, looks like only upgrade for an executive room was a coffee machine! Outside was dirty and little care taken to clean it up, homeless people sat outside on steps not being moved on by staff. Staff at breakfast not explaining to customers what to do at breakfast - just telling them it is buffet breakfast. Staff at breakfast wanted to take my pate when I was still eating. Parking is not actually at the hotel but a short walk away up a hill in a car park monitored by a car park company - hotel staff told me it was on their land! I would not go back and have cancelled a stay at a Britannia hotel in Manchester on the back of this visit to the Adelphi.

Absolutely Shocking
We arrived to a massive queue of people waiting to check in, only 2 staff on and one kept disappearing. There was a real odd odour in the lobby, like wet carpet. had to wait mins to check in. Lift was filthy dirty and again a bad smell. Room had a damp patch on the ceiling where it had tried to be painted over but paper had split under the weight of the paint. one of the towels was clearly dirty with stains on in the bath room and stained flooring. The front steps were littered with detritus. I can honestly say I would never stay here again or recommend it.

I wasnt expecting anything more than the 3 star hotel it is, which is sad for such a beautiful building with it rich history. Service was fine. Decor dated, badly in need of massive/tasteful renovation (no doubt expensive though!) Room - clean, tiny (is a twin). Radiator stuck om, was sleeping in a sauna, 'sleeping' is a stretch - Breakfast - honestly, awful. Basic range (less choice than at Premier Inn), hot buffet was, er, not hot but stone cold. Sausages and Hash Browns tasted like they'd have been really nice if even like warm. Coffee machine was broken, no sign on it just several cups of hot wataer where customers kept trying to use it... instant avaliable but was possibly the worst cup of coffee I've ever had. Bar - small, but lovely and representative of the history/building Whiskey Sour was top notch.
