The reception area smelt amazing and we loved the decor, check in and check out were seamless and the front of house staff welcoming and friendly. The room was spacious and spotlessly clean, we liked the decor and found the bed comfy. The location was excellent. Downside - the shower in our room didnt drain properly and half flooded the bathroom, one of the lifts was out of service meaning a long wait. My partner has an injury currently and so we couldnt use the stairs. We were at the front of the property and found it to be a bit noisy but normal for a city centre, however the air conditioning unit/pipes in the room kept us awake more. Didnt use the restaurant or bar, but looked a lovely place.

Second stay at The Alan. First visit, great service, second the opposite. It took 5 attempts to order some olives at the bar, and other guests were leaving due to poor service. Not much better at breakfast service, incorrect orders, having to ask multiple times for drinks, and staff sloping off to chat with reception staff at any opportunity.

Form over function
Lacks some of the basics. Not enough mirrors, no plugs near mirrors. Shower temperature control had a mind of its own so took ages to warm up and then was like showering in lava. Staff friendly. Check in staff mumbled and couldn’t hear them above music. Rattling air con all night. Female hairs from previous guests in rugs in room. Aesthetically nice. Form over function.

The reception is nice, modern and pretty cool. Unfortunately only one lift was working which was a bit of a pain. However my room was on the 6th floor and this is where it goes wrong. Exposed wires outside the lift weren't great but that was nothing compared to the disappointment when I entered my room. The first thought is wow that's alot of wood from the 70's, next thought was that the carpet looked like it had been there for many many years. It was the bathroom that finished it off. It was essentially a wet room for those with disabilities which is fine but what I don't think I will ever get over staying in a hotel in 2024 that had a shower curtain to pull round. I can't imagine it is properly cleaned regularly, not an experience I want to repeat. The set up also meant after showering the whole floor is soaked. So if you have a shower, get dressed and then need the toilet you need to dry the floor or take your socks off and dry your feet after use. That being said the price was ok and whilst I wouldn't rush back it did the job as it was only for a couple of nights
