Holidays To Tokelau
Located smack dab in the South Pacific Ocean, Tokelau consists of three small coral atolls (think ring-shaped coral reefs that double as small islands).
If you're one of those travellers who likes to check off the places they've explored, this spot is a can’t-miss. A territory of New Zealand, Tokelau—which is Polynesian for "north wind"—takes its name from Tui Tokelau, a god in Polynesian mythology, and its indigenous life hasn’t changed a lot over the centuries. That's what makes Tokelau holidays such unique experiences. If you just want to enjoy the sun, this is the place for you, as beautiful beaches are calling your name.
Things to do in Tokelau
Start your Tokelau holiday by checking out Fakaofo, arguably the most significant of the three atolls. Here you'll discover the Traditional Village Hall. Also on this island are three small churches for Catholic and Protestant inhabitants. Overall, Tokelau is deeply Christian, and visiting a church offers the chance to experience local religious life. The Fakaofo Village Square is also a good spot to relax and people-watch. Fale—the main islet of the islands of Fakaofo—is the best area to chat with locals and perhaps learn some of the Tokelauan language.
On the islands of Atafu, if you're lucky (or just plain charming!) you may be able to go on a fishing expedition with a local. See the underwater world on a snorkelling trip, then venture to Nukunonu, where you can see and stay at the historic main hotel—the island's first commercial lodging.
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
You won't find any malls on Tokelau, as the culture here is very traditional. Hence, commercialised storefronts are simply not available, and that's part of the charm and experience! That doesn’t mean you won’t pack away plenty of souvenirs, though, as a Tokelau holiday package from Wotif will leave you with plenty of cash to spend on local handicrafts, including carved pieces and unique coins.
When it comes to dining, options are similarly limited, but you can get a meal at Tokelau's main hotel. Fresh fish, leafy greens, bananas, coconuts, papayas, breadfruit and pork are the main foods enjoyed in Tokelau. In short, if you're a fruit fan, you'll have no trouble staying full here.
Holidays in Tokelau aren't complete without quaffing Samoan beer, which can be bought at any shop along the main streets. There is also a guest house on Atafu where you can hang out with other adventurers and locals. It’s a great way to unwind after a hard day's work beach-bumming in the tropics.
