Stayed in a double family room in an annexe to the main building. Room was spacious and clean. Huge bathroom. Convenient location. Good selection for breakfast.

2 adults and a 16 yr old so needed 2 proper beds not a campbed -sofa bed etc so this was great 2 doubles in same room . Room 74 was in attic so only 3 skylight windows - was very hot uncomfortable air conditioning couldn’t cope . Plumbing needed maintenance!. However was clean, friendly staff and very convenient to Minster and shambles. Definitely stay again - York parking is expensive so do your homework!

There is a lot to recommend this hotel, but there are some serious issues that make me question its four star rating. We arrived on a hot summer day to find the air conditioning in our room not working and most of the windows sealed shut. Temperature in the room was over 85 degrees. Eventually fans were provided and a locked balcony door opened, making the room habitable but only barely. No effort was made to composite us for the inconvenience. Much of the hotel needs renovations and updating. Some of the serving staff in the restaurant were rude. The breakfast was very good, the location of the hotel great for touring York. It’s a shame the overall experience was subpar.

Was disappointed with this stay. Room was a trek to get to. Down a corridor, then out a door, in another door and back in then up a flight of stairs. All doors shut with a bang. So very noisy. Bath mat had hairs on it. Room wasn’t tidied on our next day. Ran out off toilet paper. Just very disappointed

Overall lovely staff, large comfy room, pleasant staff, very clean, brilliant breakfast. It was great that we got to leave our suitcases on site after checking out so we could have more time to look around!

The hotel is made up of a curious arrangement of small buildings, so your experience will differ depending on your assignment. We had a 'family room' (living room with two hideabeds, and a separate bedroom with queen bed) located in a back building, up a set of stairs to a shared landing, then another set of stairs up to the attic suite. The unit was average: quite worn, musty, creaky floors, toilet that took 3 or 4 flushes to get going, no windows just opening skylight windows in the rooms. We had a strange situation where we took one of the hideabed's wiry mattresses and piled it on the other hideabed to make a passable level of comfort. When we were out for the day the staff disassembled the bed, stripped the linens, threw my daughter's clothes on the floor, and folded up both of the hideabeds so that when we returned, our daughter didn't have a bed! The front desk couldn't explain, but someone came out right away and made up one of the beds again. We were happy to move on to our next hotel, but to this hotel's credit the staff were nice and helpful, and the location next to the Shambles is probably one of the best in York.

A very basic hotel, think higher-end motel. The room is sparse, the only amenity being a wall-mounted TV; no fridge, no WIFI, zero surfaces in the bathroom to put your stuff on, mould growing on the caulk around the bathtub. The staff is pleasant and cheerful. The breakfast buffet is plentiful and well stocked.

Really can’t say enough about the location, quality of the beds / rooms and the amazing staff. So many novice travelers (especially Americans) complain about the silliest thing. If you can’t even yourself here. Don’t travel.

We had an attic room no view to speak of , velux windows which we struggled to open but eventually managed , very noisy from bar opppsite however Bed comfy but pillows terrible therefore barely slept Air conditioning unit not working but fan provided Floor had a large divot under the carpet which we kept stepping in - not ideal Fairly basic room considering the cost and breakfast not included Breakfast was just ok , worst fried eggs which. Were hard and sat there for hours Nothing filled up , had to search for bread myself Location of hotel was good to city centre

It was a bad stay experience although the staff there were very helpful in resolving the issues. We are staying in a family room with 2 bedrooms and its layout was poor only one air conditioner was available for a room, and the other two rooms had no air conditioning. Much of the furniture is visibly worn. There was no hot water in the bathroom for one night due to a boiler problem and I was taking shower at that time 😭。Also, the rooms are full of damp smell.
