Nice hotel in a good location, although the room was a bit dated and in need of painting. I loved the mirror that pops up from the table and the large bathroom with great shower. A bottle of water in the room would also have been nice.

Fabulous stay, wish we had stayed longer!
Extremely friendly staff. Stunning building. Superb Deluxe Twin room (opted to upgrade, following booking). Enjoyed the quality breakfast. Leisure facility was very clean and quiet at 7am. Great location with parking. Easy walk to the main attractions and the Shambles. Would definitely recommend and return in the future. Also, 2 day York Pass was great value. We had a fun packed trip!

Excellent Stay at Principal York
We chose Principal York because of its proximity to the rail station. In fact, we left by a rear door, right into the station without going out in the rain. Luckily, we had lovely weather fir the rest of our stay, and everything is an easy walk from there. Staff was friendly, responsive, and helpful.

Expected better than it was
Entrance and downstairs beautiful. We paid quite a lot of money for our room and it was dated, looked like it needed a bit of a refresh and TV kept turning itself off. We were on a high floor and one of the lifts was out of order the whole time we were there and the other lift could only take 2 people. Breakfast was average.

An older, elegant hotel by the train station, with a helpful staff that assisted with luggage to and from the main station area. The room was well set up and comfortable. Public rooms were spacious, clean and well appointed.

Positives at the Principal
Negatives first - standard (bed)room is small with insufficient space to hang clothing if it's more than an overnight stay. Room was hot - aircon was effective but too loud to leave on for long. Shower was not cleaned properly and water did not drain away resulting in it flooding the bathroom floor. However, maintenance were very attentive and sorted whilst we were out. Good stuff - lovely bathroom, easy check-in (though3.00pm is busy and quite slow), very good choice at breakfast with attentive staff (pretty quiet at 8.00am), fantastic pool and jacuzzi...plus a wonderful staircase and facade if design is your kind of thing.

Immense hôtel collé à la gare d'où l'intérêt. L'autre plus c'est la taille de la chambre qui est plutôt grande pour une single. J'y suis restée une nuit. J'ai dû faire appel au service de l'hôtel pour la télévision qui avait un problème (qui n'a pas été résolu mais pour lequel il m'a été proposé une solution temporaire). J'ai également signalé un problème de fermeture avec la porte de ma chambre qui était ouverte à mon arrivée et qui ne se ferme que lorsque l'on la claque violemment (toutes mes excuses à mon voisin qui ne voulait pas être dérangé!), enfin j'ai constaté un problème d'évacuation d'eau du lavabo. Autant de problèmes en une seule soirée c'est une première pour moi ! Ayant bénéficié d'un tarif attractif, je n'ai pas fait d'histoire mais je ne pense pas renouveler l'expérience. Expedia : je ne pensais pas que les remises fidélités avaient pour but de nous faire attribuer les chambres les plus délabrées.

The hotel is full of charm. All staff were well trained, welcoming and obliging. All areas were clean and hotel services staff were friendly and obliging. My only disappointment was the room. I didn’t book a standard room as this was a treat for my granddaughter, there was a broken door on the cupboard housing the tea and coffee making facilities, one of the arm chairs was badly stained and the carpet also looked grubby.

This is my 3rd visit to this hotel. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The only downside this time is I feel the room was slightly overpriced but I didn’t mention this at the time of checking out, I’m an anxious person and wasn’t confident in how to express this. This should not put you off staying here because I do think the staff would have listened if I’d said something. This is not their fault.
