Book your Chania holiday
Holiday In Chania
Chania holiday packages take you to a part of the world that screams "lay by the water and snooze", and that's a perfectly acceptable (if not expected) way to spend your time here.
But the island of Crete also offers natural wonders far from the ocean. Here you can view artifacts of ancient history, scrape your knees hiking through a deep mountain gorge, or do the expected and just breathe in the ocean air as you sip a cocktail.
Things to Do in Chania
Chania holidays can include a trip to the old town, where the Venetian Harbour opens up to the deep blue sea. You can spend hours here walking the narrow streets and admiring the work of local artisans. You'll be able to enjoy the architecture and atmosphere, where it's busy with tourists and locals but somehow still laid back. There are also specific sites to see: Take the short walk out to the stone lighthouse and catch an exhibition at the Mosque of Kioutsouk Hasan.
While in the old town, stop at the Archaeological Museum. It's an impressive collection of Minoan (Bronze era) artifacts, and offers a glimpse into the long history of Crete. The building itself, with its arched ceilings and sunlit hallways, makes for a cosy and comfortable space.
If you want to shake yourself out of the dreamlike atmosphere of the old town, head out early in the morning to the Samaria Gorge, located about 40 kilometres away. There's a challenging 16-kilometre hike through this national park to the nearby village of Agia Roumeli. If gazing at the scenery with a coffee is more your style, use one of Wotif’s Chania car hire options to get to the park entrance and skip the hike.
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
The old town is noted for its boutique shops and the place to find unique and high-quality goods on your Chania holiday. This is not a place of tacky souvenir shops: impressive artisan jewellery, glassware, rugs and textiles are all on offer for the discerning traveller. Of course, if you want to pick up a magnet or postcard, there's the Agora market hall, where you can also grab a bite to eat between meals.
Restaurants are spilling from every corner of the old town, and you've got your pick of Mediterranean food and other European fare. But if you want to detach yourself from other tourists, try the eateries along Akti Papanikoli, a road that offers fine dining and ocean views that are the hallmark of holidays to Chania.
Take a nap before heading to a bar by the Venetian Harbour to experience the nightlife in Chania. This neighbourhood is where people gather for live music, drinks and good food. Prepare yourself for a late night because the activity doesn't start until about 10 or 11 p.m. and lasts until the wee hours of the morning.
