Things to do in Lisbon
The ancient, Moorish centre of Lisbon, the Alfama, is crowned by St. George's Castle, which offers views of the old city and a window on the city's maritime past. Further west, Jeronimos Monastery will mesmerise you with its mashup of Moorish and Gothic influences, which echo throughout the city and create link to the past.
For more cool historical stuff, head to Belem Tower, west of the Alfama, along the shoreline. To see Portugal's vision of the future, go east to the Parque das Nacoes, a World's Fair village from the 1990s that's home to one of the world's largest aquariums. The hilly city is connected by a network of trams, funiculars and bus routes, but many travellers spring for a Lisbon car hire deal from Wotif to allow for day trips (the entire country is barely larger than Tasmania, after all).
Shopping, Dining, & Nightlife
Holidays to Lisbon aren't complete without a round of shopping. The Chiado, a small slice of the Alfama, is full of boutiques, traditional shops and souvenirs that recall Portugal's medieval and industrial pasts hit it up for gifts to bring home. But that's just one side of Lisbon's view of itself LX Factory, a refurbished thread and fabrics factory, is home to dozens of shops filled with artisans, graphic and product designers, design showrooms and creative services companies. To experience "the real Lisbon," spend time mulling the unique cultural flavours of each extreme.
You'll find great food everywhere on your holiday in Lisbon it's just a matter of knowing what you're looking for. Cafes offer cheap espresso and pastries all day long (many Portuguese proudly down four to six espressos per day) make sure to try a slice of torrada, or Portuguese toast, which is sliced thick and drenched in butter. Later in the day, you can wander the streets while you sample petiscos (Portuguese tapas) from a few restaurants many are quick to get in and out of, and they have extensive menus of small dishes that put individual chefs' personal touches on Portuguese classics. For a midnight (or later) snack, try a pao com chourico, Portugal's version of a hot dog, with the meat baked right into the roll.
The most popular style of bar in Lisbon is the "inside/outside" bara place where most patrons are not indoors but mingling on the street outside with their imported beers, Portuguese liqueurs or Brazilian-imported Caipirao, mixed with vodka or crushed fresh strawberries. If you prefer your nights later, louder and more energised, dance clubs open around midnight and really get hopping at 4 a.m. The Intendente neighbourhood, just up the hill from the Alfama, wins the hot-spots-per-square-metre contest, while the Cais do Sodre quarter (slightly further out) hosts the city's largest and most famous dance clubs and live music venues.
